Soc. hears Autumn's Glories The September meeting of the Aubum Horticultural meeting was held on September 11 in he Aubum Memorial Hall. O Canada was sung with Mar­ jorie McDougall accompanying. The president Erma Cartwright welcomed all and read a poem “Glories of Autumn”. Minutes of the previous meeting and the Direc­ tor's meeting were read by the Sec­ retary Dorothy Grange and approved. Treasurer Ell Lapp gave the financial report showing a balance of $1,355.88 after the payment of outstanding bills. The secretary then read the correspondence including the Educational Event for District eight to be held in he Wingham Armouries on September 23 at 7:30 p.m. Murray Gaunt will speak on “Parliamentary Proce­ dure” and Jerry Nobb on Landscap­ ing and tree and shrub pruning. Frances Clark had brought a Pas­ sion Flower and explained the sig­ nificance of the different parts of the flower in relation to its name. Dorothy Grange showed a plant grown from the seed of a Lychee Fruit (purchased here) but which is native to South China. She had tast­ ed the fruit when in China. Norma Hazlitt introduced the guest speaker District Director of District Eight, Shirley McKague who brought greetings from the district. She spoke on Flower Arranging and the culture of minia­ ture roses with displays of both. Norma then called on Mary and Shirley Stoll, the other members of the program committee who demonstrated the construction of a container water garden and suitable plants to complete it which was well done and we hope someone will be inspired to try one next spring. The meeting closed with the singing of the Queen and Grace. During the social lime a dessert lunch was served by Helen John­ ston and Carol McDowell and while we enjoyed a chat there were also daffodil bulbs for sale. These were from Manchester Garden and prepared by Jane Stryker. Draw prizes were won by Linda Wilson, Dorothy Schneider, Lois Haines, Erma Cartwright and Martha Daer. Micheline gave the opening prayer and call to worship. The hymn “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” was sung. Micheline told the children's story. The hymn “Rock of Ages” was sung. She also read the scriptures followed by all repeating Psalm 63. The hymn “What a Friend we have in Jesus” was sung. Micheline's sermon was entitled “Making Repairs”. The United Church Creed was read in unison followed by the Lord's Prayer. The offering was received by Ell. Lapp and Ian Andrews. “Faith of our Fathers” was sung. Micheline gave the Benediction and choral response “O Master Let Me Walk with Thee” ended the service. The president Martha Daer opened the meeting with sentences from the scriptures. The scripture reading was from St. Mark's Gospel. A meditation with the Chaplain followed and prayer was offered. Erma Cartwright read a story about a “Heritage of Hon­ esty”. Glenda Salter the Presbyterial visitor of the evening gave a talk on Faith and Mission. Marion Haggitt gave two readings “Harvest Bless- Australian girl, guest at WI meeting Andrea Ribey of Seaforth was guest speaker for the Walton Wom­ en's Institute meeting on Education held in the community hall on Tuesday evening, September 10. Andrea is an exchange student who had been in Australia for almost a year, even spending a Christmas there with her host fami­ ly. She took her audience on a trip to Australia through the pictures she had taken there. She also had many articles on display she had purchased while in Australia. Her commentary made it most interest­ ing. Mary Humphries had intro­ duced Andrea and presented her with a gift of money on behalf of the Walton Women's Institute members. Margaret Mclnroy presided for the opening exercises of the Insti­ tute and read a poem on “Sharing”. Marjory Humphries was pianist and also read the minutes and gave the treasurer's report. Members answered the roll call “What I read to educate myself.” Several items of correspondence was read. The Guelph area convention in Arthur will be held Oct. 16 - 17. Voting delegate will be Marion Godkin and alternate Leona McDonald. Oct. 7 the Huron County Institute Rally will be held at Seaforth at 9:30 a.m. Ruth Axtmann and Mar­ jory Humphries are delegates with Berva Watson alternate. The Institute's next meeting has been changed to Wednesday, Octo­ ber 23 when all 4H members in the area are invited.
