Some old-time Barn Dance stars to perform again Continued from page A-16 Reunion will have a special treat as three members of the original Bam Dance will be among the performers. Fiddler Archie Mann of Listowcl began with the Barn Dance in its pre-lclcvision days. Now in his 90th year, he is not only still playing his fiddle, but he has never stopped. Still bringing joy to others by sharing his talent he has become a dearly-loved, popular entertainer at retirement residences, nursing homes and special occasions. Ranch Boy Ernie King, well-known for his days on Circle 8 Ranch (which ran on CKNX from 1955 to 1978) and Saturday Night Barn Dance is looking forward to his reunion with Archie Mann in Blyth. "He has remained very active musically, which is quite an accomplishment. It's nice that his old friends are getting together again after all this time," said Mr. King. Another veteran appearing in the Blyth production is Mary Elliott Freeman, who made her debut on Bam Dance when she was a young girl. A former resident of Clinton, now living in London, Ms Freeman signed a Nashville recording contract in 1990 and has since completed her second album Teenage Runaway. Also appearing on the program is Mr. King's daughter, Michelle who has been appearing with her father for the last few years. "She likes to sing and it just seemed kind of natural for her to sing with me," said Mr. King, regarding Michelle's orientation into the business. "I hadn't been as active musically, but we began sharing a song or two from the old Bam Dance. Then I thought for her to do a show with me now and then, would kind of give her a start" In addition to Mr. Mann, there will be three other fiddlers taking part in the Bam Dance in Blyth, Shelburne Fiddle champion Chuck Joyce, Lloyd Warwick of Bluevale and 10-year-old Mathew Johnson from Stratford. An accomplished fiddle player at the ripe old age of eight, Mathew, performed with the late Al Cherny and won the Al Cherny Trophy in Bobcaygeon, Ontario several limes. He was part of the 25th Anniversary Special of the Tommy Hunter Show, which featured a memorial tribute to Mr. Cherny. Other performers for the evening will be Harry and Debbie Busby of Crippled Duck fame and Blyth's Wayne McClinchcy. Steel player Ron McWatcrs joins well-known Hanover musician Richard Kncchtcl and the CKNX Barn Dance Roadshow Houseband. Car show brings back memories Even for those who never threshed a sheaf of grain or plowed a field with a tractor and plow there is one display of machinery at the Thresher Reunion that can bring back memories. On the "arena" ball diamond sit gleaming rows of cars, their chrome polished, their interiors full of smells of yesteryear. From the antique models from early in the century, the classic cars of the fifties and sixties, the show has some fond memories for everyone over 30. Bill Crawford of Clinton has been in charge of the car show since 1987. He said the size of the show has been growing because of the inclusion of the "classic", the more modem cars that are a little more available to hobbiests than the antique cars. Classics have opened up the hobby field to many more people, he says, and that has increased the number of people wanting to show their beauties. "We had the room," Mr. Crawford remembers , "so let's fill it." Last year there were about 80 cars on display each day, some leaving to be replaced by others. This year he's hoping to fill the entire ball diamond. Don Robertson and the Ranch Boys perform for one of the early CKNX Saturday Night Barn Dances.
