Tractor pull I
new addition
to show
Those restored tractors that are brought
to the Thresher Reunion by owners from
all over the province and beyond will have
something extra to do to show off their
capabilities this year.
For the first time there will be an
antique tractor pull to show off the pulling
power of various tractors.
Unlike some other tractor pulls, this is
a competition limited to stock tractors
with no modifications. It is also limited to
tractors owned by members in good
standing- those with memberships paid up
by May of this year.
There will be eight classes, four on
each day. Weight classes of 2500, 3500,
4500, 5500, 6500, 8000, 10,000 and
12,000 pounds will compete.
The rules, says co-ordinator Jeff
Thomson, were borrowed from similar
events in Dungannon and Lucknow and
the pull sled used at those events will also
be used at Blyth.
Jeff guesses there will be a lot of
entries (possibly 75-100). The event, Jeff
says, is designed to give people who
already come to the show something to do
with their tractors, not bring new entries to
the show. Tractor owners like to have
things to do for their machines, not just
have them sit and look pretty.
With that in mind there will also be a
machine to which the tractors can be
hooked up that will test the strength of
their engines. There will also be the Baker
Fan that tractors can power.
Tractor owners can also get involved in
other competitions, though Jeff says it's
often hard to get some shy people to take
part in events like the belt-setting and the
competition to sec who can back up their
wagons the straightesL
Jeff is also hoping to organize a "slow
race" in which the tractor driver who goes
the slowest wins the race.
Tented town
should be
biggest yet
With the popularity of the Huron
County Pioneer Thresher's Reunion
growing yearly the demand for additional
camping facilities increases as well.
Last year, 352 trailers parked at the
grounds, before and during the event, for
a record-breaking attendance, said
campground chairman Joe Hallahan.
This year, he says, hydro and water
service has been added to accommodate
another 60 or 70 trailers. Though there are
unserviced lots available, the number of
serviced ones has increased consistently,
since the Reunion's birth 30 years ago, to
the present total of about 250.
There arc no reservations for campsites,
Mr. Hallahan said; it is strictly a first
come first served basis. Cost is $8 a night.
In addition to more campers coming
yearly, (Organizers anticipate 400 this
year, up from 268 the year before) Mr.
Hallahan says they also arrive earlier. "We
expect some to arrive Friday or Saturday
the week before, in order to get the good
spots."
A lot of retired people, he says, spend
their time in the summer travelling from
one show to the next. "This is traditionally
the last one so they can get here early and
not miss anything." The Fiddle Jamboree
is always a good draw, he said.
Mr. Hallahan noted that there are many
more Americans coming each year to the
Reunion, something that pleases him a
great deal. "This is good to see. It shows
that the Reunion is becoming known in
areas farther away from her."
Though Mr. Hallahan has enjoyed
heading this particular committee for over
half a decade, he hopes that due to its
increasing size, someone else will take it
over and he can step down. "It is getting to
