Bag tying is just one of several events that visitors to the Huron Pioneer
Thresher Association compete in. Competitors also try their hand at belt
setting and log sawing.
Mmmmmm, smell those
home-baked beans cooking
Amid the smell of wood smoke from
the steam engines or the scent of oil
lubricating the various machines visitors
to the Thresher Reunion at a certain time
of day, may catch a whiff of the flavour of
home-baked beans.
Raymond Scotchmer of the Huron
County Museum and his big bean pot have
been part of the Thresher Reunion for a
decade now, hitting just the spot with
hungry visitors.
The work is carried out by volunteers
and the proceeds (there is no charge but
donations are asked for) go to the Friends
of the Museum and to the Thresher
Association.
And volunteer work it certainly takes to
serve the beans. Each of the three days of
the Reunion four to six volunteers will be
helping cook the big pot of beans. Each
day 66 pounds of white beans go into the
pot. The work starts at 6 a.m. in order to
have the beans ready for noon. In fact last
year, Mr. Scotchmer says, he even starting
cooking the pork hocks the night before so
they'd be ready the next morning.
Besides the beans, 95 pounds of pork
hocks will be used over the three days, 18
Spanish onions, three cans of tomato juice,
three bottles of ketchup, three kilograms
of brown sugar, three pounds of butter and
salt and pepper and garlic to taste.
All this is cooked in a 50 gallon cast
iron kettle over an open fire and by the
time its all ready about noon, a crowd has
gathered, ready to eat.
"We serve the beans in a cup and when
the first one is served it doesn't take long
for the word to get around and then there's
a line-up," he says. At one time a smaller
kettle was used and one year it took only
three-quarters of an hour to empty the
kettle for hungry visitors.
Along with the bean pot, in its familiar
spot across the street from the saw mill,
the volunteers will be also serving cold
and hot-mulled cider and hot buttered pop
com.
