During the Thresher Reunion, the arena becomes a bustling market, as men and women, young and old, come to discover unique gifts and bargains. For Joan Houston, who has been in charge of coordinating the craft show for several years, the crafters have become almost like family. "I love doing this," she said. "I have met a lot of nice people. My crafters are so cooperative, so kindly." Filling the spots at the craft show has never been a problem, says Joan. "My phone rings off the wall constantly. Right after the Reunion is over, people are calling already for next year," she says. According to Joan, there's a bit of a lull for a while before the phone calls resume again in March. At that time, she said, she typically responds to about one or two calls a week from people expressing an interest, though no real commitment is made. Then in June, she starts getting calls quite steadily, "That's when I put the note pad by the door and give my kids instructions on what to do." Applications are sent out to interested parties and these must be returned by the deadline date. Joan then places the names on computer so she can monitor the selection of crafts coming in or any changes in their product. "That's something that's very important. You don’t want to end up with an arena full of knitters. You want that diversity," she said. Pfuron Pioneer‘Tnresner‘J^eitnion Pl THE CITIZEN. WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 4.1991. PAGE A-9. When all the tables have been booked, Joan, with the aid of an arena floor plan, assigns each crafter to a certain spot, so the displays are varied with no similar ones being too close. "I try to work it so there isn't a situation like two people selling ceramics beside each other," she says. Though the crafters tend to be many of the same ones as the previous year, there are some new ones expected at this show. For the first time Marilyn McCarthy will be displaying her unique hand-made country folk dolls and dried apple wreaths, Joan says. Another display that will be at the craft show for the first time is one by the Huron County Branch of the Genealogical Society. They will have a display on history, maps and how to trace your roots. Joan said there will also be books on cemetery transcriptions and genealogical books for sale. Sometimes, for one reason or another, crafters don't always make it to the show annually. Mike Browne, who hasn't been in attendance for a few years, according to Joan, will be back with his handcrafted clocks, as will local woodworkers, Bill and Jo Landon, who missed the show last year. Fred and Eva van der Heide, who Joan says, have displayed their beautiful Dutch ceramic pieces at the craft show faithfully every year, will be present this time as well. Joan’s daughter Terri, has been part of the craft show for many years doing a demonstration of spinning. In addition to showing people her technique with a spinning wheel, Terri will be using a loom as well this year. Local woodworker Bill Landon lets this little lady take a test run on one of his creations at the Thresher Reunion’s annual craft show.
