Threshers, Optimists provide new activities for youngsters
A very welcome, new attraction has
been added to the long list of special
events that have been part of the Huron
County Pioneer Thresher Reunion over its
30 year history. For the first time, there
will be activities for children to be
sponsored by the newly-formed Blyth
Optimist Club.
"Children have been slighted in the past
because of time. We just couldn't fit them
in," explained Ray Hallahan, who along
with Jean Kennedy chairs the special
events committee. "It's been something we
have always wanted to do so we looked to
the Optimists this year.
Optimist Murray Siertsema, who is in
charge of organizing the events, said the
club was looking for some way to become
part of the Thresher Reunion and as the
club motto is "Friend of Youth" this
seemed perfect.
Though plans were still not quite
finalized, Mr. Siertsema said the events
will, of course, be agriculturally oriented.
There will be a mini-tractor pull, bag
tying, bail throwing and possibly a tug-of-
war.
Participants will be divided into age
categories and the events will be held on
Saturday afternoon. There will be no
winners; each child will be given a ribbon.
"It will be just for the fun of it," said Mr.
Siertsema.
Mr. Hallahan said the committee has
always tried to keep the gate price down to
encourage families to attend the Reunion.
"Now with the children's games there will
be something for everyone to do."
The adult events will be held on both
Saturday and Sunday beginning at 1:30
p.m. Participants will compete in belt
setting with steam engine and tractor, log
sawing and bag tying. The latter two are
open to men and women.
Mr. Hallahan, who has been running the
special events for the past four years, said
they usually have 60-75 people competing
in the events. "We are getting a lot more
people participating every year," he added.
Shuttle buses, off-site parking, help
prevent traffic chaos near grounds
Several years ago the Thresher
Association helped the village of Blyth
buy more land so the fairgrounds could
accommodate more parking. The Thresher
Reunion just kept on growing, however
and another solution soon had to be found.
Today visitors can avoid traffic tie-ups
on Saturday and Sunday by parking at a
special parking lot set up at the east end of
the village on County Rd. 25. Special
shuttle buses will be travelling to and from
the fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each
day, stopping just outside the main gate.
Parking at the lot is free, helping make
a visit to the Thresher Reunion both
convenient, and inexpensive.
This little fellow shows he can drive like the big guys during the kid’s tractor
pull at the Thresher Reunion. This year there will be more events for children,
sponsored by the Blyth Optimist Club.
