The Citizen, 1991-09-04, Page 12PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1991. Blyth council reluctantly agrees to zoning meeting Blyth Village Councillors reluc tantly agreed, at their Aug. 27 meeting, to schedule a special meeting to read written complaints against its zoning bylaw. Reeve Albert Wasson was reluc tant to go into the whole issue again after learning that the only written complaint received was from the lawyer for George Szarek over restrictions on development of his lots at the east end of Dinsley Few female teachers in administrative positions Figures in an Affirmative Action/Employment Equity report by the Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario (FWAO) show that the number of women teachers represented in administrative positions is lower than desired. According to Flo Dyck, president of the Huron Women's Teacher's Association (HWTA) the figures show that from 1990 to 1991, only 23 percent of the principals were women, and 42 percent were vice-principals. This is despite the fact that women teachers make up more than 70 percent of all public elementary school teachers. In Huron County, she says, the board of education is working problem behind", statistics province's, Ms Dyck says that is due to the fact that there are not many administrators retiring or moving to different counties. "Things have very much remained steady." The HWTA is preparing women by giving them job training necessary to qualify for the position. They offer two leadership courses to make sure females are employable for those positions — one which is aimed al training interested females in order for them to do well when they apply, while the other is a professional development course. "Speaking as a woman and a teacher I am always open to having more and more females in supervisory positions. However, I believe in promoting a female who can do the job, not promoting a female because she is female," said Ms Dyck. The Ministry of Education, she says, has set a goal to have females occupy 50 percent of the adminis trative positions by the year 2000. She feels at the present rate of change, however, that goal will not be able to be reached for another 23 years. "That is why we are pushing for public awareness on the issue." The report showed as well that despite 10 years of lobbying by the Federation and several years of government pressure, up to 30 school boards have not voluntarily set up an employment equity pro gram. "The big thrust we want to make is education and promotion of female members and public aware ness of the situation as it stands" said Ms Dyck. St. "I'm sick of this," the Reeve stormed. "As far as I'm concerned we can't afford this (the cost of a special meeting). It's people like that who are costing the ratepayers money." "Il's people like this all over the country," chipped in Councillor Dave Lee. "That's why we have all the books of regulations." Mr. Szarek has protested several limes to council himself, and through his lawyer, that he doesn't feel restrictions on his property are proper. Some of the restrictions are due to flood-plain mapping from the Blyth Creek at the back of the property and were recommended by the Maitland Valley Conserva tion Authority (MVCA). Other restrictions result from the fac some of the lots aren't serviced water or sewer. "We've been over this issue, ant over this issue, and over this issue,' said Councillor Steven Sparling pointing out that council had lis tened to the advice of experts fron the MVCA and the County Plan ning Department in setting up th< bylaw. Clerk-treasurer Helen Grubl pointed out that it is part of th< planning process that council mus review written objections and tha Cindy Fisher, the village's repre sentative from the county planning department couldn't attend the nex regular meeting of council so the special meeting was required. The meeting was scheduled for Sept 10. hard to correct the and not "lagging Though Huron's were lower than the GRANT CHISHOLM Chairman of Canadian Oil Heat Association Topics cover diverse range continued from page 6 The fall season topics for caregivers are sure to interest a diverse group, including parents of school age children.
