The money was from the proceeds of the annual tournament Kids & US begins second year September 12 marks the beginning of a new season for the locally- formed parent support group Kids and Us. Once a month this group provides creative and stimulating activities for children up to 6 years, while their caregivers get together separately to hear guest speakers, and discussions about childrearing, family concerns, mental health and more! For a modest fee of $1.00 per fami ly, the caregiver gets a morning to talk to others in the same situation, to share experiences, ideas, and mutual encouragement while the young ones enjoy some fun together. In tltis sec ond year, Kids & Us invites any care giver of children-stay-at-home or working moms and dads, in-home daycare providers, even teenage babysitters - to take advantage of this program. Caring for children is a tough job, often not recognized or supported adequately. Kids and Us is designed to help fill this need. Kids and Us is essentially a self help group. It got started a year ago when a half-dozen young mothers with preschoolers and infants real ized they needed information and the support of each other to cope with the many demands of caring for young children. This year the group of moms on the organizing committee welcome two new helpers. Pam Tiffin and Laurie Willits. Others include Rita Rice-Bowers, Pauleen Kerkhof, Mary-Anne Peel, Karen Stamper, Liz Stryker and Shannon Weitendorf. The children's activities will be co ordinated by Deb Sicrtsema, who also offers her musical talents on gui tar, and Linda Campbell, who has been an experienced and faithful vol unteer with the toddlers, throughout the first year of Kids and Us. Kids and Us get-togethers are held on the second Thursday of every month in the United Church in Wing ham. Infants are cared for in the well equipped nursery while caregivers meet downstairs. Refreshments are provided for both children and adults. Kids and Us welcomes any newcom ers and encourages everyone to have input to new topics and guest speak ers. Responding to the needs of care givers is what Kids and Us is all ibout. continued on page 12 held in August. Blyth Festival Singers began their 10th season.
