WI Fed. takes over Royal Winter Fair displays What do you do when you have a problem in rural Ontario that needs solving? You approach the Women’s Institute to see whether with their years of experience and diversity of talent something can be done. That's exactly what the Royal Winter Fair has done for this year's Fair. The Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO), at their August Board Meeting in Guelph decided to accept the offer of the Royal Winter Fair to look after the Country Craft Section. This will feature WI members demonstrating and displaying a variety of Craft work that arc done by the rural women of Ontario, from the traditional to the unusual. As well the FWIO is hosting Women's Day at the Royal. For many years the Royal Winter Fair has featured and hosted various other groups, but when FWIO President Peggy Knapp pointed out that 50 per cent of the population was ignored, the Royal Winter Fair was happy to give FWIO the opportunity to host the event. All NTA approves railway sale the details of Women’s Day have not been finalized but it will lake place on November 7. Among the other new activities planned by FWIO is the start of a series of week long courses titled Personal Growth and Renewal. These are modelled after the highly successful Denman College Courses in England, where the English WI have a year round college devoted to giving a variety of courses ranging form Computer Training to Flower Arranging. The first two courses in Ontario to run early next year will be on Musical Appreciation and Battenburg Lace, and will take place at Crieff Hills Centre, near Guelph. This is another example of FWIO seeing a need and responding to it. In its ruling the agency said it has no reason not to approve the sale of 115 kilometres of track between Stratford and Goderich and Centralia and Clinton from CN Youth pleads guilty to assault A pre-sentence report will be pre pared before a Brussels-area man is sentenced for an assault that took place at a party following a school dance in May. Steven L. Michie, 19, R.R.5, Brussels pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm when he appeared in Ontario Provincial Court, Criminal Division in Wing Rail to the Goderich-Exeter Rail way Co., the Ontario division of the U.S.-based RailTex Inc. of San Antonio, Texas. RailTex purchased the lines from CN last September for $4 million but has spent nearly a year getting approval to eperate from the NTA. A spokesperson for CN Rail said the company still has two outstand ham Wednesday. The court was told that Mr. Michie and Mark Fraser were both attending a party in Howick town ship following a high school dance on May 26. Both had been consum ing alcohol. About 1:45 a.m. an argument developed between the two over a pair of shoes. Mr. Michie punched Mr. Fraser in the head, knocking him to the ground. ing matters standing in the way of completing the sale. One, a formal ity, is to receive an Order-in-Coun- cil from the federal cabinet because a Crown Corporation is making the sale. The other condition to be met is approval from the Ontario Municipal Board. RailTex had originally hoped to be hauling freight on the line by last April 1. Mr. Michie then got on top of Mr. Fraser and struck him more times around the head. Mr. Fraser was taken to hospital where he was kept for two days for observation and treatment. Judge. R. G. E. Hunter set Oct. 18 for sentencing after Mr. Michie's lawyer, Alan Mill asked that a pre-sentence report be pre pared. Judge R. G. E. Hunter was told that Chris Anson hadn't meant to defraud anyone in the one charge of fraud and nine charges of false pre tenses. Money had been coming into and out of the bank account he wrote the cheques on but there was no money in the account at the time the cheques were cashed. Acting Crown Attorney Dick Lockwood withdrew al but one of the charges against Mr. Anson. On that occa sion, Mr. Anson had issued a cheque for $42.43 to Ball Macaulay in Clinton but when the cheque was returned from the bank for non-suf ficient funds, the company turned the cheque over to police. Restitu tion has since been made. Alan Mill, lawyer for the defen dant, said Mr. Anson suffers from epilepsy and has difficulty holding a job be cause of it. He is currently unemployed. Judge Hunter gave the suspended sentence and put Mr. Anson on 12 months probation.
