Juveniles’ season ends Sat.
If the Brussels Juveniles played
eight inning ball games they would
have participated in a hard fought
playoff series with the Chepstow
Thunder. Unfortunately they played
nine innings and were easily elimi
nated from WOA A juvenile action.
Tuesday night in Chepstow the
Thunder broke open to a 1-0 game
scoring six runs in the fifth inning
enroute to an 8-1 opening game
victory. Friday night in Brussels,
Chepstow again broke open a close
game with four runs in the ninth
inning to sweep the series with a 7-
2 win.
The Juveniles opened a Saturday
morning tournament action in
Wroxeter with a 4-1 victory over
Arthur. Saturday night the Juve
niles, trailing 8-0 after two innings
to Kitchener McLeod's fought back
only to lose 9-6. Scott Johnston,
with a home run, and Shawn Jack-
lin going two for two lead the
attack in a game that saw McLeod's
pitcher Tony Melanson strike oui
nine of 11 batters faced for the win.
The Juveniles season comes to an
end on Saturday when they partici-
pale in their group playoff tourna
ment to be held in Bluevale.
Brussels opens against the Monk
ton Jrs. at 10:30 a.m.
Mosquitoes end
outstanding year
The Brussels 1991 Mosquito
soccer team finished an outstanding
year with a record of three wins,
one tie and five losses. This record
earned them a tie for fifth place
going into the tournament.
In the tournament Brussels
played Palmerston and quickly
started with a two-goal lead.
Palmerston came back to tie, but
with a few minutes remaining
Brussels scored to win 3-2.
The next game Brussels lost 7-2
to Wallace, who eventually went on
to win the tournament.
The final game saw Brussels in
control of a strong Newton team,
always managing to stay one goal
up. With a few minutes left, New
ton scored with a high ball caught
by the wind, which went off the
cross bar. The score was 4-3, New
ton. Brussels finished fourth out of
seven teams. The team ended its
season with a trip to see the Kitch
ener Kickers play the Toronto Bliz
zards.

Bulls set to charge
It may still be the dog days Oi
summer, but it’s time to think about
digging the hockey bag out of the
basement for another year.
The Brussels Bulls of the West
ern Junior C loop are getting ready
for training camp which is just two
weeks away. Any budding hockey
stars in the making are invited to
try out. Camp opens Saturday,
August 24 in Listowel with regis
tration at 5 p.m. followed by an ice
work-out at 6:30. Another two hour
practice follows Sunday at 6:30.
Last year's Western Junior C
finalists will be missing several key
veterans including league scoring
champ and M.V.P. Marty Rutledge,
who played out his eligibility last
year. The Bulls will also lose three
veterans who will be at college.
Greg McNevan of Harriston will be
in school in Peterborough, Sam
Kulafofski from Stratford and Scott
Thede of Port Elgin will be heading
to Sudbury.
On the brighter side, there could
be as many as 12 returnees from
last year's team. Coach Scott Petti
grew says, “We have some holes to
fill but with a good nucleus of play
ers back I think we can be in the
running again.”
Coach Pettigrew will have two
new faces behind the bench this
year. Hugh Nichol, who did some
scouting for the Bulls last season,
and was head coach two years ago
becomes an assistant coach. He
will be joined by Charlie Smith of
Monkton, who has several years
coaching experience.
The first test of the 1991-92 sea
son for the Bulls comes in late
September. Four exhibition games
have been scheduled. The Bulls
will play a home and home set with
New Hamburg. They will also take
on last year's All-Ontario finalists.
The Orangeville Crushers in a
home and home series. Orangeville
lost the All-Ontario title to the
Hanover Barons.
Anyone looking for more infor
mation on try-outs can call the
Bulls Manager Steve Coulter at
887-9289.
