Ethel ONE YEAR AGO AUGUST 15,1990 Loma Fraser was sworn in as the new Blyth councillor, filling a vacancy caused by the resignation of Ken Brown. Mrs. Fraser was chosen from two applicants. About 40 people attended a pub­ lic meeting in Belgrave regarding the proposed Kinsmen complex. Pam Buckle of Somerset, Eng­ land and Lynette Young of Port Pirie, South Australia visited at the home of Robert Hunking, RR2, Auburn and Debbie Craig, RR2, Blyth as part of an international exchange program. Firemen from Wingham answered at call at the Belgrave home of Joanne Anderson. The fire started in the upstairs bedroom and was contained there, though the upstairs suffered considerable dam­ age from water, heat and smoke. A fire on the farm of Murray Adams, just east of Londcsboro completely destroyed a bam. THREE YEARS AGO AUGUST 10,1988 Brussels council discussed the idea of a summer celebration for the village and asked local service clubs to come up with ideas. Coun­ cillor Malcolm Jacobs told council he felt Brussels should have some kind of celebration unique to itself. The Huron County Board of Edu­ cation changed its election bound­ aries, bringing the number of trustees from 14 to 16. West Wawanosh taxes increased by 11.5 percent. Brussels Jr. Tigers won the Wal­ ton Sports Clubs' annual Bantam tournament, beating Kitchener 3-2 to capture the title. FIVE YEARS AGO AUGUST 13,1986 Bob and Rene Richmond Ross and Cora Alcock of Brussels were enroute to Guelph in a car driven by Mr. Alcock, when they were broadsided by a car that missed a flashing light, east of Elmira. Mrs. Richmond sustained a bro­ ken ankle and Mr. Richmond suf­ fered a lacerated retina in his eye. Mrs Alcock was badly shaken, while her husband was treated and released immediately after the acci­ dent. Mr. Richmond credited seat­ belts with saving their lives. Brussels, Morris and Grey swim team finished third in its first ever swim met held at Wingham pool. Dorothy Dilworth and Joan Bate­ man have returned from a two- week tour of England, Holland, Denmark, northern Germany, Swe­ den and Norway. They reported beautiful weather. Joan and John Smith spent a week at Lurgan Beach and another week touring and visiting in North­ ern Ontario. They were accompa­ nied by Joan's parents, Ted and Rita Williamson of Newmarket.
