The Citizen, 1991-08-14, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 1991. Wreck Brussels fireman, Jim Oldfield, and an unidentified bystander take a look at what's left of a car driven by 16-year-old Ken Graber of Brussels. Mr. Graber's car burst into flames after he lost control on the gravel road, entered the ditch and struck a tree. He was pulled from the wreck, just in time, by Hugh Ives and two other men, according to a witness' report. Mr. Graber is in Victoria Hospital in London. Street expansion tenders low Tenders came in lower than expected for the Elizabeth Street extension to serve Huronview when Brussels council opened the sealed envelopes Aug. 6. Seven companies tendered, on the project with a difference of $60,000 between highest and lowest tender. The lowest tender, accepted by Developers told to work it out Two Brussels developers were told by Brussels village council last week to find their own solution to a problem with a common wall between (he buildings they are ren ovating. Ken Dowling, who is renovating the old Export Packers building on Brussels' main street, appeared before council to request council look at the possibility of paying for the repairs to the common wall between his building and the one next door owned by Robert Hesse. Building inspector Paul Josling who was on hand at the meeting, agreed the wall between the build ings is in bad shape and the brick front on Mr. Dowling's building is pulling out. In answer to a question from Reeve Gordon Workman, Mr. Josling said he didn't see the need to bring in an engineer, that the work should be able to be done as long as the two developers could agree on who paid what. Mr. Dowling said it appeared it would require four men, working four days, to repair the wall. "My suggestion," Mr. Josling said, is to let the two of them (the property owners) work it out. I really don't see why the town should get involved." Councillors agreed but Council lor Bruce Hahn said he didn't think a building permit should be issued until the wall was repaired. But Mr. Josling said the wall was not a rea son to hold up the building permit. His only recourse would be to issue an order to remedy an unsafe build council, was from Wellington Con struction Limited, of Palmerston for $110,154.14. Steve Bums of B.M. Ross Asso ciates, on hand for the lender open ings, said his companies final estimate was that the work would cost $129,000. The work, which includes lowering sanitary sewers in the area, installing water main, ing, he said. Reeve Gordon Workman said he hoped the two men could settle the problem between them. "Now that you're going ahead (with repairing the abandoned building) we just want to make sure it's done proper ly," added Councillor Hahn. "As long as it’s within the regulations, we're happy to go along." Mr. Dowling informed council that he plans to create a total of 10 apartments plus four commercial units in the building that dominates Brussels' main street.
