Blyth council briefs Council accepts $195,000 grant Blyth Council passed a motion to accept the $195,000 PRIDE grant from the provincial government for improvements to main street and other parts of the community. The grant must be matched by equal funds from the village, mean ing a total of $390,000 can be spent on improvements. Much of the work is associated with the rebuild ing of Highway 4 from Blyth to Wingham. Improvements to Blyth's main street, including a new bridge over Blyth Creek, are scheduled for the third year of the project. Meanwhile council was told that the first concrete signs that the highway project is at long last underway should be seen this week. The Ministry of Transportation has leased land from the Public Utili ties Commission by the pumphouse where a trailer will be located for the three years of the reconstruction program. The trailer was expected to arrive this week.**♦ Councillors were stumped as to how to deal with the donation of services by Ray Hanna Jr. who had constructed the frame built from the wood of the memorial oak tree that used to stand on the Memorial Hall lawn. The tree was cut down to make way for the expansion of Memorial Hall. The log was saved and taken to Mr. Hanna who cut the wood, dried it and crafted it into the frame. Mr. Hanna refused to take any money for all the work sug gesting that if council wanted to do something it could make a donation to the Blyth Figure Skating Club. Council was stumped at how much the donation should be given the huge donation Mr. Hanna had made. The decision on the donation was delayed to let councillors think on the issue longer.♦♦♦ Council agreed to pay the $600 bill from the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority for 3600 trees planted al the Blyth-Hullclt Landfill Site. Councillors agreed it was a good bargain getting that many trees for that cost. Hullett township, which arranged for the trees will be paid for the purchase, then will eventually pick up a share of the costs as part of the operating costs of the site. *** Councillors approved payment of a second application of lignin for dust control al a cost of $800. "I really do think that it is effective. They said up front it would take three applications," said Councillor Sparling who also uses the same control method at his business. 1 think it will take a year or two to really do a god job", said Coun cillor Lee. The lignin, a by-product of the pulp and paper industry, is advertised to create a hard surface, almost like paving, after several applications.
