TUCKER BELGRAVE AND CALVIN UNITED CHURCH By the time you have read this article, my wife and I will no longer be in Canada. No, we have not been expelled, at least as yet. It is that time of year in which people look for some recreation. The magic word "vacation" is on everyone's lips and is the chief pre occupation of many. All of us look forward with eagerness to the change of surroundings and the change of pace which vacation time brings. The pressures and problems of daily life have a tendency to crowd in upon us and oppress us. A few days away seem to have a mar vellous ability to freshen our atti tudes, alter our perspectives, change our spirits from jadedness to enthusiasm again. This is true even for those of us who are fortu nate enough to have a job that we like. In any event, we have planned a visit to our daughter and son-in-law and our two grandchildren, who live in the mountains of Wales in the British Isles. Not only the scenery will change; but so will our language. We shall be going back to speaking Welsh, which is one of the oldest languages in the British Iles, predating even the Scottish Gaelic and the Irish Erse. We shall be going back to our origins, always a pleasant experience, but more importantly we shall be meet ing with and sharing with those whom we love and from whom we have been parted. There is a sense in which we are not complete as a family as long as distance parts us from one another. The occasional telephone call, nice though it may be, is no substitute for the warmth of proximity. To hold someone you love closely in your arms means far more than the expression of sentiment in letters or in words. Loving means closeness. Loving means sharing. Loving means joining in a sense of belong ing. It brings fulfillment and peace and joy. If these things are true of our human relationships, how much more true they are of the relation ship which we should be enjoying with our loving, heavenly Parent. For many of us are lonely in a sense which transcends the merely human level. We are experiencing a sense of lostness. The world seems to be such a vast and unfriendly world at times. The things we have loved and cherished over the years seem to be disappearing under the constant influence of change. It hardly seems to be the warm and comforting world of our childhood any more. We seem so much alone, adrift upon a sea which carries us onward against our wishes. Well then, it is time for recre alion. Note how the word is spelled. God longs to hold us in His arms and thoughts as much as we desire to be held. "He has made us for Himself, and our hearts are rest less until they find their rest in Him." So said St. Augustine some sixteen hundred years ago. They are equally true now. Our home has not moved, but we have. Why not turn again and come home? The door is open and our Parent awaits us! Then we shall discover what belonging really means. BRUSSELS UNITED CHURCH Rev.
