Phone 887-9487 Procters host reunion Belgrave WI celebrates 80 years About 50 former students, who attended Wingham High School in the 1940's, gathered at the home of Ross and Mary Procter on Sunday afternoon, June 23. Kay (Wallace) Cruickshankia teacher, from Wingham, visited with and renewed friendships with some of her students. The president, Mrs. Norma Moore welcomed everyone, after which cake and ice cream were served. The decorated anniversary cake on the head table was cut by Mrs. Alice Scott. Several numbers were sung by the Belgrave Quartet com­ prised of Mrs. Donna Shaw, Mrs. Elizabeth Procter, Mrs. Muriel Coultes and Mrs. Dorothy Coultes and accompanied by Mrs. Freda Johnston. Several cards of congratulations grandchildren present, Alvin and Verna Higgins; largest shoe, Jason Fitch; lucky number, Michael Marks. Charlie Higgins moved a vote of thanks to the President for a job well done. Mrs. Mary Coultes introduced the guest speaker, Miss Lavonne Ballagh of Wingham, who spoke on the W.I. theme "Plant a Tree". She made many comparisons between people and trees and chal­ lenged us to "Be a Tree in 1992". Although circumstances and the seasons of life change us, we can still display a timeless beauty from within. Like a tree we can be strong, reliable, caring, loyal and colourful. As a tree's branches reach upward so our thoughts and actions must be lifted up to our God. Dorothy Coultes thanked Lavonne for her inspiring message and gave her a gift in appreciation. A sing-song was led by Mary Coultes and Dorothy Coultes. A gift was presented to Mrs. Jean Mathers of Bluevale who had been a member of the Women's Institute for the most number of years. Sev­ eral door prizes were given out. Mrs. Alice Scott gave a history of the beginning years of the W.I. which was formed at a meeting held in the Orange Hall in February 1911. Mrs. James Anderson was the first president with 46 women joining at the first meeting. She spoke of many activities and accomplishments over the years including the war effort, restoring Brandon cemetery, starting the teaching of music in the schools and helping the School Fair. Mrs. Ada Taylor outlined the his­ tory of the past 40 years, including the purchase of the Hall from the Foresters in 1968 and the renova­ tions and improvements to the Hall in the past two years. She intro­ duced the past presidents who were in attendance. The president of Huron West District, Mrs. Wilma Higgins, brought greetings. A humorous reading "Will you make squares?" was given by Mrs. Alice Nicholson. Mrs. Jean Mathers extended a vote of thanks on behalf of every­ one present for a very enjoyable evening. The meeting closed by singing "O Canada", with the pianist being Mrs. Gladys Van Camp. The Tweedsmuir History books were on display for all who wished to look through them during a social half hour.
