Mrs. Mary Coultes introduced
the guest speaker, Miss Lavonne
Ballagh of Wingham, who spoke
on the W.I. theme "Plant a Tree".
She made many comparisons
between people and trees and chal
lenged us to "Be a Tree in 1992".
Although circumstances and the
seasons of life change us, we can
still display a timeless beauty from
within. Like a tree we can be
strong, reliable, caring, loyal and
colourful. As a tree's branches
reach upward so our thoughts and
actions must be lifted up to our
God.
Dorothy Coultes thanked
Lavonne for her inspiring message
and gave her a gift in appreciation.
A sing-song was led by Mary
Coultes and Dorothy Coultes.
A gift was presented to Mrs. Jean
Mathers of Bluevale who had been
a member of the Women's Institute
for the most number of years. Sev
eral door prizes were given out.
Mrs. Alice Scott gave a history of
the beginning years of the W.I.
which was formed at a meeting
held in the Orange Hall in February
1911. Mrs. James Anderson was
the first president with 46 women
joining at the first meeting. She
spoke of many activities and
accomplishments over the years
including the war effort, restoring
Brandon cemetery, starting the
teaching of music in the schools
and helping the School Fair.
Mrs. Ada Taylor outlined the his
tory of the past 40 years, including
the purchase of the Hall from the
Foresters in 1968 and the renova
tions and improvements to the Hall
in the past two years. She intro
duced the past presidents who were
in attendance. The president of
Huron West District, Mrs. Wilma
Higgins, brought greetings. A
humorous reading "Will you make
squares?" was given by Mrs. Alice
Nicholson.
Mrs. Jean Mathers extended a
vote of thanks on behalf of every
one present for a very enjoyable
evening. The meeting closed by
singing "O Canada", with the
pianist being Mrs. Gladys Van
Camp. The Tweedsmuir History
books were on display for all who
