The Citizen, 1991-06-19, Page 23Sports Brussels Bantams open season The Brussels Bantam Softball team opened its season at home against Londesboro on May 22. They scored five runs in the first inning, but Londesboro kept eating the lead away and eventually won the game 7-5. They then travelled to Londcs- boro on May 27. Londesboro built up a 6-0 lead before Brussels scored six runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. Londesboro look two in the sixth to win 8-6. Brussels' third game was at home to Winthrop. Again Brussels was forced to come back from an early Belgrave Squirts lose Belgrave Squirts dropped an 18-5 decision to Belmore at home June 13. Belmore scored three in the first and six in the second before Bel­ grave could get on the scoreboard with a single run in the home half of the second when Jeremy Camp­ bell scored. Brussels Juveniles win, lose Friday night in Brussels the Juve­ nile boys team overcame a four run first inning deficit to defeat Wrox- eter 11-7. Scott Johnston struck out seven for the win with relief help from Andrew McCutcheon, while Shawn Thompson and Blaine Marks each reached base four out of four tries. Sunday night Arthur's Rob Hen- Moncrieff WI folds after 40 years It was a bittersweet occasion as members past and present gathered al the Moncrieff community hall recently to mark the 40lh anniver­ sary of the Women's Institute. Bit­ tersweet because it will be the final anniversary celebrated as the group has decided that due to declining membership it must disband. Over 50 ladies spent the after­ noon reminiscing and visiting with WI members from neighbouring communities. Charter president Mrs. Janet Richmond, along with several other past presidents was in attendance. Past presidents of the WI are: Janet Richmond, Lillian McLean, Viola Machan, Lois McLean, Lil­ lian Smith, Myrtle McKay, Laura Ludington, Wilda Baillie, Georgina Smith, Hazel Ward, Ruth Osbom, Shirley Verstoep, Bettie Hood, Ruby Naylor, Goldie Rutherford and Carol Thornton. It was October 23, 1951, when the organizational meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Alex Speiran. Thirty-seven ladies were present and the executive was elected. Besides Mrs. Richmond, it included Mrs. Speiran, first vice president, Mrs. Howard McNaught, second vice president, Mrs. Charles Harrison, secretary-treasurer and Mrs. Joseph Smith, Mrs. Eldon Mann and Mrs. Leonard Machan, directors. In its 40 years of formation the Moncrieff WI has undertaken many projects like the publication of a cookbook, sponsoring girls clubs, short courses for members, local 4- H and a boys' ba'1 team. They have also made donations to the Brussels 5-0 deficit just to have Winthrop take the lead again 7-5. Brussels scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, capped off by John Miner's two run homer to win 9-7. On June 3, Brussels travelled to Winthrop for a rematch. This proved to be no contest as Winthrop scored 12 runs in the first due to spotty Brussels defense as they cruised to a 21-5 win. The next night, Brussels bounced back as they travelled to Rostock and came out on top of a 10-3 score. Their next home game is June 26 against Monkton. Belmore scored five more in the third with Kevin Campbell replying with a home run for Belgrave. Belgrave outscored Belmore 3-2 in the fourth inning as Adam Gar- niss, Justin Campbell and Jamie McCallum scored. Il has been responsible for the redecorating of the old Moncrieff hall and purchased fur­ nishings and items for the kitchen. In 1965, they helped the hall board in renovating the old school, which had been purchased by the community for a hall and this has been the WI meeting place since. Most of its members have come from Grey and Elma township and membership peaked in the late 195O's with 40 members on the roll. The numbers have dwindled con­ sistently over the years, mainly because of members moving away. With only nine left, the executive feels they cannot continue and though the 40th anniversary may be the last gathering of the Moncneff WI, it was an afternoon spent shar­ ing memories and a happy ending to a piece of community history. 4H club meets The third meeting of the Luc­ know Beef 4-H club was June 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Green's Meat Market, Wingham. After opening with the pledge John, Bob and Chad showed the delicacies of cutting up a carcass of beef. For many members this was the first lime they could visually sec where the cuts of beef they ate came from in the animal. John Green was thanked by the club with a 4H mug. Belgrave team scores 2 wins Belgrave Pre-mite ball team scored two lop-sided victories last week. On June 8 the team travelled to Belmore where they ran up a 31-18 score. Belgrave took an early lead in the first as Justin Campbell, Derek Marks, Jason Fear, Laura Meier, Devon Moffat, Donald Mullen and Craig Marks, with a home run, scored. Belmore replied with five runs in its half of the inning but Belgrave came back with seven more runs in the second. Justin Campbell scored a home run. Also scoring were Derek Marks, Adam McBurncy, Peggy Procter, Travis Campbell, Cole Vincent and Mathew Brom­ ley. Belmore scored six runs in the bottom of the second. In the third, Belgrave scored eight runs as Jason Fear stroked a home run. Craig Marks, Heather Black, Devon Moffatt, Jim Wray, Daniel Mullen, Adam McBurncy Blyth team hosts Lucknow On June 10, Blyth Atom Soccer team hosted Lucknow in Belgrave. This was an exciting game as play went from end to end. Luc­ know finally got a goal and threat­ ened to go up by two but the second goal was disallowed. Then with some fancy foot work by Steve Raymond, Blyth got their goal. But Lucknow retaliated with another goal to make it a 2-1 game. Blyth had some good chances but were unable to tie. The next game is on June 18 in Goderich. Team members are: Joey Schmidt, Tammy Walker, Jeremy Van Amersfoort, Adam Blair, Brent and Justin Sauve, Ross Clark, David Ansley, Peter Nonkes, Jud Hakkers, Jesse Collins, Elisha Courtney, Steve Raymond, Matthew Clark, Pauline Blok. Brussels ties Palmerston The Brussels Atom Soccer team travelled to Palmerston Tuesday, June 11 to play its third game of the season. These two teams were evenly matched as the score ended in a lie 0-0. and Peggy Procter also scored. Bel­ more scored five runs in its part of the inning. In the fourth and final inning Belgrave scored nine runs. Justin Campbell, Craig Marks and Jason Fear hit home runs. Also scoring were Candace Procter, Travis Campbell, Jeremy Lcishman, Cole Vincent and Mathew Bromley. Bel­ more managed only two runs in the final inning. July 11 Belgrave hosted Blucvalc and won a 24-11 win. After Bluc­ valc scored three runs in its half of the inning, Belgrave came back to score nine in the first for a lead it never relinquished.
