Irvine Wallace marks 90th birthday
An Open House was held on Sat
urday, June 1 at Blyth United
Church in honour of Blyth's one
time Reeve, Irvine S. Wallace's,
90th birthday.
Mr. Wallace was born on May
30, 1901 in Morris township to

He said he had got on the trail of
prompting natural gas after hearing
a news item that the Ontario gov
ernment was pushing for natural
gas use as the cheapest way of
healing non-profit housing units.
The government had banned the
use of electrical heating in govern
ment-owned units.
Mr. Scrimgeour’s campaign has
the support of Huron M.P.P. Paul
Klopp and Bruce M.P.P. Murray
Elston. Mr. Klopp wrote to Union
Gas saying he was in favour of the
pipeline extension that would allow
residents of the north of the county
the option of natural gas. New sub
division being planned and local
industries could take advantage of
the new service, he said.
Mr. Elston also praised the deci
sion of Union Gas to survey the
north end of the county and urged
the company to go into Bruce
County as well to serve the Kincar
dine and Port Elgin areas which
aren't currently being served. He

Morris township and Blyth.
Besides being the Blyth Reeve
for a time, Mr. Wallace was also
secretary treasurer of Blyth Hydro
Commission. He was employed as
town clerk and owned Blyth Chop
ping Mill and Wallace Dry Goods.
He is a trustee of Blyth United
suggested this might make the
pipeline more profitable.
Interviewed earlier, Diane Beat-
tic of Union Gas said the purpose
of the survey of the area is two
fold: "one is a property survey to
ascertain lot distances, and the
other a house-to-house survey to
determine how many potential sub
scribers live in the area." If both
surveys are favourable, the pipe-
laying could begin in the spring of
1992 and hook-ups could follow as
the pipe-laying is completed.
Recycling costs increase

reclaimed materials. Last month,
for instance, the village had 2.82
tons of recycled materials for a cost
of more than $250 but recovered
$161 from the sale of materials
leaving the village with a bill of
over $100. The biggest cause of
expense, she said, is newsprint.
Reeve Workman said this is
Church and currently resides in an
apartment in Clinton.
Mr. Wallace and his wife the late
Dorothy Howard, had four chil
dren: Shirley Rutledge of Blyth,
Howard of Goderich, Irma Mar
shall of Clinton and Bev of Lon-
desboro.
Mr. Scrimgeour urged Blyth
council to get behind the move. "I
feel we have to think about the
future and we've got to think about
our neighbours and the possibilities
this has," he said.
Councillors had no questions
(Councillor Steven Sparling
declared a conflict of interest) and
promised to discuss the subject fur
ther after its regular agenda was
finished. The meeting adjourned
without further discussion of the
presentation.
becoming a moneymaker for some
body. It's too bad costs keep going
up, he said, because people are get
ting sick and tired of the higher
costs and they're going to question
whether they should be recycling.
The only alternative to the cur
rent buyer is Bluewater Rccyling,
the reeve and clerk said, and it's
costs are even more expensive.
