Councillors awed by size of Huron view project
Brussels village councillors got a
chance to study the plans for the
Huronview North project at the
south edge of town Monday night
and were amazed at the sheer size
of the project.
Clerk-treasurer Donna White
unrolled a two-inch-thick roll of
architect's drawings of the new
facility showing everything right
down to the placement of furniture
in the room and apartment units in
the new county home for the aged.
The tender documents for the pro
ject form a three-inch-thick book.
Plans call for a building with sev
eral wings with the 20-unit "alter
native housing" (apartment) section
closest to Cty. Rd. 12. The 61-bed
extended-care building will include
an indoor courtyard and garden
area.
Council also set water and sewer
age rates for the new building
which, though it is in Morris Town
ship, will be serviced by the vil
lage. Councillors decided to charge
the normal out-of-town rate of 1.5
times the in town rate for both
water and sewer. It will mean
Huronview will pay $676 a month
for sewerage and $470 a month for
water for a total of $1146.
Councillors also agreed to a con
nection fee of $1500 for sewers and
$900 for water.
***
Councillor Greg Wilson and Mrs.
White will attend the Court of
Revision for the Huronview Drain
in Morris township June 18. The
engineer's report on the drain, to
drain the Huronview grounds, esti
mates the costs at $33,400 and cur
rently assesses the costs as $32,000
to Huronview and $1400 to the vil
lage to handle the run-off of the
Elizabeth St. extension which is
being built to serve Huronview.
Council Dave Hastings said he
thought that even with this charge
the village was better off than if it
had had to improve the Elizabeth
St. storm sewer to take the water to
the north.
The village librarian asked coun
cil to provide an air conditioner for
the library but she'll have to get
along with windows that open.
Councillors have decided to replace
some of the windows in the library
and councillors felt that if more
ventilation can be provided with
the new windows that would have
to do for now.
♦♦♦
Councillors indicated they were
concerned that owners of lots in the
industrial park not downgrade the
look of the park. Reeve Gordon
Workman said he wasn't please
with litter on one of the lots. Coun
cillors said they weren't happy
either with a proposal from one
owner to put up a quonset-style
building. The village building
inspector was instructed to tell the
applicant that such a building
wouldn't be allowed.
***
A bylaw was passed setting the
sewerage rate at 191 per cent of the
water rate. Under the new rate the
monthly charge for water will be
$9.80 (up from $9.30) and the sew
erage rate will be $19.78 (up from
$18.78).
Extra security is being added at
buck and does at the Brussels, Mor
ris and Grey Community Centre,
Councillor Mary Stretton reported.
She said there have been problems
with minors getting in at such
dances so the recreation committee
is trying to tighten control of the Because of the Canada Day holi-
situation. day the next council meeting will
*** be postponed to Tuesday, July 2.
Letter to the editor
Reader gets plea from
Philippines
The Editor,
This morning I received the fol
lowing handwritten letter. Will you
be so kind to reproduce it in The
Citizen?
I'm mailing this urgent plea from
the Philippines as I do not trust the
mail in Bangladesh at this time.
THERE IS A TREMENDOUS
CRISIS AT THE LONNIE REX
JUNGLE HOSPITAL IN
BANGLADESH.
Community and hospital water
supplies contaminated. Epidemics
of malaria, cholera, snake bites, and
deadly diarrhea.
Worst conditions we've ever had
at our hospital. Even the staff is
sick.
Supply of vital medicines deplet
ed by such massive demand.
Today, 250 children and mothers
had to be sent away WITHOUT
vital medication.
There aren't even medicines for
diarrhea.
Must restock vital medicines at
once! Can I count on you for a gift
of $50 to help in this emergency? If
not $50, please send the most you
can.
Thank you for understanding this
urgent need, and I look forward to
hearing from you at our Toronto
office.
(Signed)
Lonnie Rex
