TACKY TOURIST
TOURNAMENT
The Debating Team at CHSS
invited some grade 8 students to
attend an informal debating session
last week. Their advisor is James
Barnes, an English teacher at
CHSS. Following is a description
of a very enjoyable day. Partici
pants from B.P.S. were Kim Fergu
son, Kimberly Richmond, Angela
Hunking, Tina Burkholder and
Erica Clark.
IS TOURISM REALLY
TACKY?
by Erica Clark and
Kimey Richmond
Okay, we walk in the front door
of Central Huron Secondary
School. We hear a voice, directly
above us. Looking up we see this
guy leaning over the balcony
yelling at us, "Do you represent the
peoples court of Canada?" Our first
thoughts were, "What an idiot! And
we're going HERE next year?"
Just then Shane Pounder
appeared out of nowhere and told
us to follow him to the library.
noon added enjoyment. Everyone
enjoyed the social aspects of the
games and the informal acquisition
of skills.
TREE PLANTING
by Kim Elliott
The trees will begin to grow like
weeds after Hullett Central students
took part in a tree planting activity.
Most of the classes took part in the
Once we got there Shane told us
that John Ramirez would be our
tour guide for the afternoon.
After Shane had left us with John
he began to give us a brief descrip
tion about how the debate works.
By the time he was done everyone
had arrived. There were nine of us
in total. The five of us from Blylh,
two from Huron Centennial and
two from Hullett.
Feeling a little restless we took a
walk around the halls of the school.
We finally got back to the library
just in time for the debates that
were about to start.
The first two were senior
debates. The topic was, "Be It
Resolved That Southern Ontario Is
A Tourist Paradise." Because they
were short of senior debators, John
took part in the senior debate.
In the second debate, Angela
Hunking from B.P.S. took the place
of a senior, who got sick. Other
than Erica making a face at Ange,
and Ange stiffling a laugh, she did
really well, especially since she
was debating for the first time, and
tree planting. The trees will grow
'til they're as high as the sky. That's
if you water them and watch them
like an eagle.
GRADE 8 TRIP
by Jason Dalton, Karla Stacey
and Andrea Postma
On Thursday, May 9 the Grade 8
class went on a trip to a newspaper
place where they saw how the
it was against seniors.
After the first two debates, we
were treated to a snack and a
chance to walk around.
The next two debates were done
by the junior debators. The topic
was: "Be It Resolved That Travel
ling Improves The Mind." During
the second junior debate we
watched Sarah, Thuy, Kyristy and
Perry debate. Someday Perry might
be a professional actor. He loved to
act out what he was saying! For
example, as he described his expe
rience landing in a foreign airport
he acted out the soldier with the
submachine gun telling them to get
in line.
After the two junior debates were
done we were served a delicious
supper of pizza and pop. When
everyone was pretty much done
eating Jim Barnes announced the
four junior and the four senior
finalists. The four junior finalists
were: John Ramirez, Perry, Sarah
and Lillian. The four senior final
ists were: Ben Barnes, Chris,
Cheryl and another girl.
newspaper is made. They also went
to the Parliament Buildings where
they had a tour. After this they
went on a boat tour of the Toronto
Harbour. After this long day they
checked into their hotel, freshened
up, then went to Eaton's Centre to
shop 'til they dropped. The next day
they went to the C.N. Tower. Then
after a lot of fun they came home.
The final debate topic was: "Be It
Resolved That Tourism Is Truly
Tacky." We watched John and Ben
on the government side debate
against Perry and Cheryl on the
opposing side. Twice during the
debate we could hear Chris in the
other room yelling at the top of his
lungs about being tacky. All the
finalists placed first and were given
a trophy. In our opinion it was a
fun and enjoyable afternoon and it
should be done again next year.
