Space is Limited, so Call This Newspaper Today! Turn your backyard into a wildlife garden Unlike most backyard land scapes, a wildlife space isn’t a car pel of lawn and a collection of exotic plants. It’s a carefully designed ecosystem that uses plants native to animal habitats. That way, it attracts animals to your backyard. The guidelines for creating a wildlife space: rovide the 3 basics. A success ful wildlife garden provides food, water and shelter. You can provide food and shelter with plants, and water with a bird-batn or small pool. (Make sure you supply all three basics year-round.) • Buy a variety of plants. Animals need variety. Your garden should offer a diversity of food and cover. • Plant in clumps. By planting shrubs and trees in natural-looking clumps, hedgerows, and thickets, you're providing animals with ideal shelter. • Plant in layers. Animals love layers. Give your space a deep, rich texture by planting not just trees and flowers, but also shrubs, small trees and grasses. • Plant native plants. If you want animals in your backyard, you have to give them plants they’re already adapted to. • Avoid chemicals. Because they kill organisms that are vital to polli nation and decay, synthetic fertiliz ers and pesticides can upset your mini-ecosystem. • Don't over-clean Don't clean away the dead leaves and plants till late spring (such plant matter pro vides animal shelter and ground insulation). Better still, don't remove the autumn's last leaf-fall. And to provide cover for wildlife, don't trim the lower branches of shrubs and evergreen trees. • Install nest boxes. Nest boxes or bird houses can be important sub stitutes for natural nesting sites. However, they must be designed correctly to encourage native species and be properly cared for to reduce parasites and disease.
