New alternative fuels help clean air battle While Canada creates only two per cent of the greenhouse gases, it uses more energy per capita than any other nation. With long distance to travel emissions from cars and trucks are a major pollution source in Canada. So the Ministry of Energy Mines and Resources is working with industry to try to remove technical and economic barriers which pre vent greater use of environmentally friendly fuels like propane, ethanol, methanol, hydrogen, compressed natural gas and electric batteries. Propane is the most widely used alternative motor fuel. Energy Mines and Resources says there are Energy efficient appliances and lights can cut energy use By using the most energy-effi cient appliances, the Advanced House saves almost 60 per cent of the energy used by average prod ucts. You can achieve similar sav ings by buying appliances with the best Energuide rating you can find. On every new appliance sold in Canada, you will find black-and- white Energuide label, which gives the model number of the appliance What to do with hazardous household wastes What can 1 do with my hazardous wastes? • Never bury or bum chemical containers containing residue. • Don't buy more products than you need. • Give excess quantities away to those who will use them instead of throwing them away. • If you need to dispose of large quantities of hazardous waste, con tact your local municipality or BRUSSELS RESIDENTS PLEASE KEEP more than 140,000 propane-pow ered vehicles being used in Canada. Although conversion kits cost between $1400 and $3000, propane costs less than gasoline or diesel. Cars, buses and trucks run on propane produce significantly fewer harmful emissions than either gasoline or diesel. An Environmen tal Protection Agency test in in U.S. on a 1988 propane-fueled pas senger car cut carbon monoxide by 93 per cent, nitrogen oxide by 57 per cent and hydrocarbons by near ly 30 per cent compared to current clean air standards. Exhaust from propane is also recognized as hav ing lower ozone-reducing capabili ty than either gasoline or diesel and tells you the monthly energy use under normal operating condi tions. The lower the Energuide rat ing, the more energy efficient the appliance. Energy for lighting is reduced by 80 per cent by using only fluorescent lights instead of standard, incandescent bulbs. PASSIVE SOLAR SUNROOM By using an attractive sunroom provincial environment department for advice. • Separate hazardous materials from your household garbage. • Do not dispose of hazardous materials in sewer systems or open bodies of water. • Participate in Household Haz ardous Waste Days in your area. Suggest alternatives to hazardous chemicals exhaust. Propane-fueled vehicles have been shown to be safer in crashes than their gasoline counterparts and the clean-burning characteristics make engines, engine oil and filters last longer. Ethanol and methanol are also proving themselves as technically and environmentally viable fuel alternatives, either alone or as addi tives. Ethanol, an alcohol derived from fermentable sugar or starch crops, can be added at up to 10 per cent, to regular gas and used in conventional engines without adversely affecting performance, while lowering carbon dioxide and other emissions. Canada is one of the world's largest producers of that can be closed oil Irom the house, the Advanced House saves the cost of heating this space, but picks up a lol of free solar energy when the sun is shining. The sun room is also used to preheat the incoming fresh ventilation air. The house is a cooperative ven ture of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada (EMR), the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Ontario Hydro and the Farm Build ing Group of Toronto. The purpose is to show homeowners that new off-the-shelf products can make a big difference in energy savings in a comfortable and attractive new house. According to EMR's Frank Campbell, "The 'Advanced House' concept has proven to be a real winner. Reducing the amount of energy we use in our houses saves homeowners money and helps clean up our environment." Application of pre-plant incorporated sprays at the same time. methanol, an alcohol derived large ly from natural gas. Methanol pro duces fewer carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline, has a high octane rating, and costs roughly the same as premium gasoline in terms of the energy it produces, rather than its volume.
