Brussels Public School Music Night, Thursday by Rebecca Dauphin and Shane Wilson It's that time of year again when we all join together to present our best in music at our annual Music Night. On May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, the classes of our school will be taking you on a Cross-Canada flight. Each class will have a presentation about one of our provinces. The presentation will involve singing and acting as we wing our way from sea to sea, across Canada. On April 26 at 9 a.m. the students and staff of B.P.S. joined in the gym for a special assembly. Our regular opening exercises were fol­ lowed by the introduction of a spe­ cial guest, David Stephenson, the president of the Brussels Optimist Club. Dave presented medals to the Science Fair winners. We thank Dave and the Optimist Club for their interest and involvement in our Science Fair and other activi­ ties in our school. North Division Bordenball tourna­ ment was held at East Wawanosh Central School. The players from Brussels were: Shane Wilson, Ste­ fan Nicol, Grant Jarvis, Jamie Smith, Dylan Hutchins, Bill Van Beek, Jason Gauthier, Mike Dauphin, Jeff Elliott, Mike Illman and Jonathon Trollope. The boys were accompanied by Mr. Wanless. Hullett students in chess tournament Editors: Andrea Postma and Karla Stacey CHESS TOURNAMENT The chess tournament was com­ pleted with over 60 students partic­ ipating . The winners in the Kindergarten to Grade 4 division were Kris Huizer receiving the school trophy; Graham Worsell, gold medal; Jeremiah Culberson, silver medal; and Joel Arthur, bronze medal. The winners in the Grade four to eight division were Jason Culber- Mrs. Uhler took the girls: Wendy Thompson, Sarah McArter, Stacy Hahn, Lorie Ann Black, Victoria Richards, Jennifer Machan, Eliza­ beth Carr, Teresa Bridge, Becky Davidson, Kim Mulvey, Lanette Todd and Janice Jacklin. Each team at the tournament was made up of players from each school to encour­ age co-operative sportsmanship.. son, receiving the school trophy; Jim Cowan, the silver medal; and Shannon Scott, the bronze medal. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the tournament so Area schools get donations Huron County Board of Educa­ tion Director Bob Allen informed the trustees at the May 6 meeting of three donations made to the board recently. This also gives everyone an oppor­ tunity to meet new people. Every­ one played well and had fun. During the last month we have been fortunate to have Miss Michelle McNeil assisting many of the younger students in our school. Michelle is a student at Georgian College in Orillia where she has enthusiastically. The leaders were Mr. Park, Mrs. Pietsch and Mrs. Radford. P.D. DAY by Becky Wilkinson Brookside and East Wawanosh Public Schools each received $1,000 to purchase their choice of furniture or equipment. The donor was Mr. Tony McQuail the HCBE been studying Early Childhood Education. On May 2 Miss Kim Fritz joined our volunteer staff. Kim is a stu­ dent at Guelph University where she is in a child studies program. Kim hopes to become a teacher and wants to expand her experience by working with students as a volun­ teer. There was P.D. Day on April 29. The teachers went to Robertson in Goderich for a workshop on active learning. trustee for the townships of Ash­ field and East and West Wawanosh. Hensail Public School was given $325 to establish the Alvin Cole Memorial IOOF Award. This will be a coin set given annually as a Citizenship award to a grade eight student. The donor was Hensall IOOF 223. ********* A trust fund in the name of Doug Ludwig has been established for Central Huron Secondary School students who show commitment and dedication to basketball and cross-country or track teams. Mr. Ludwig, a former teacher at CHSS died in an automobile acci­ dent. The trust totalling $5,600 was made possible through donations from friends, colleagues and stu­ dents of Mr. Ludwig. Of this amount $500 is to be divided for two awards this June. Each year the money earned from interest will be divided the same way.ft************* The principals of Victoria and Robertson Memorial Public Schools in Goderich arc to send notices home to parents advising of an intended boundary change to begin balancing enrollment. Call the Du Pont Hotline 1-800-387-2169 CANADA The extra portable at Brookside Public School is to be sold to the highest bidder resulting from sealed tenders.************** Trustee Allan Carter and Vanas- tra Public School principal Bill Stevenson have been authorized to begin discussions with Tuckersmith township officials concerning cooperative undertakings at school and the community recreation cen­ tre and pool complete that would benefit the board and the township. 4H club On April 26 the Brussels 4H club went to the Listowel Reserve Greenhouse. Club members took a tour of the greenhouse and inspected the nurs­ ery where the plants are grown. The types of plants the greenhouse had were foliage, annuals and perennials. For the outdoors, they had herbs, bedding plants and shrubs. The members learned about the different types of soils, and the special hours for shading and light­ ing for plants. Special plant gardens offered al this greenhouse were mixed pans and hanging baskets. Members also learned how they watered their plants with a special sprinkling system. At the end of the visit, the president, Jacquie Seili thanked the owners for letting members come and tour the green­ house.
