Galbraith Conservation Area, lo cated on the Elma-Mornington Township line south of Highway 86, has served as a public day use and camping area for many years. The move to lease the property came after a proposal was put forward by the Optimist clubs in 1990. $3 million committed to training The Ministry of Skills Develop ment is committing $3-million to enhance access to training for women, natives and other under- represented groups, and to provide more training for technicians and technologists, Minister Richard Allen announced today. Coupled with major capital works projects, the two initiatives are part of a series of special adjustment measures that will be funded from Ward & Uptigrove CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS Listowel-291-3040 Mitchell-348-8412 R.B. MacLellan BLAKE Septic Tank Service Fast Efficient 24 Hour Service CALL RAY 887-6800 “The decision of the MVCA’s board of directors to lease the park was made mainly as a cost saving measure,’’ noted Ken Westman, MVCA general manager. The Galbraith property has been consistently losing money over the past several years, on average about $10,000.00 per year. Day use and camping attendance at the park has remained relatively low. The maintenance and operations costs of the area are borne by local municipalities. Under the lease agreement, these costs will be the responsibility of the Optimists. The funds saved by the MVCA will be used in higher priority activities, most of which are subject to additional grants from the provincial government. “The MVCA’s directors felt the agreement with the Optimists was an excellent opportunity to put the property to good use as a day camp for children, while allowing the MVCA to reduce costs,” noted Mr. Westman. While under lease to the Opti mists, the park will not be open to the general public for camping or day use. the $700-million anti-recession package announced by the Ontario government in December. Skills Development is providing $1-million to enhance access to occupational training for women and other under-represented groups. Funding will be used to provide preparatory training, giv ing trainees the basic technical skills needed to pursue apprentice ships. Oops!
