Blyth’s Minor Ball executive agrees to one more year There will be a minor ball program in Blyth this summer but villagers came close to not having one after the executive of Blyth Minor Ball resigned and handed over the books to the village. Madeline Laffin and Dianne Josling of Minor Ball told council-- lors that a meeting had been held of interested parents and only one person has showed up. “We’ve served our two-year term and won’t serve another term,’’ Mrs. Laffin told council. “We feel we have no choice but to turn the books over to the village if we can’t get help. It’s getting harder and harder to get volunteers. A lot of people figure somebody else will do it.” However, later in the week after talking to Councillor Steven Spar Pee Wees win, a total team effort ling of the village recreation com mittee, Mrs. Laffin, Mrs. Josling and Bev Bromley agreed to sit on the committee for another year. But, Councillor Sparling said Mon day, volunteers are still needed. Anyone interested should contact one of the three executive mem bers. Councillor Sparling had pledged at last week’s meeting that there would be a minor ball program in Blyth even if the village had to hire someone to look after it. “As you two well know there was plenty of discussion (last year) about how necessary the other ball park (Radford diamond) was. I can assure you that with the money the village has invested in this ball diamond either volunteers will come forward or someone will be hired.” Reeve Albert Wasson added “every one of us around this table would have been shot if we hadn’t provided that second ball diamond. 1 think the kids have too much to do.” Mrs. Laffin pointed out that it wasn’t minor ball that was pushing for the second diamond. Very little minor ball was played on that diamond last year because it wasn't finished in time. The new diamond was used nearly exclusively by adults. She said that if someone had to be hired it would drive up the cost of ball a lot. “People don’t want to pay more but they don’t want to help out,” she told council. Councillor Sparling worried about the lack of volunteers saying “the world runs on volunteers.” “This is really sad,” he said. “This (volunteerism) is the only thing Tournament schedule The Blyth Lions Club will hold their 20th annual Little Lions Novice Hockey Tournament on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24. Although Howick tied the game on a harmless looking shot, Blyth took the lead for good with 30 seconds left in the first. Greg Toll fed Ryan Chamney who spotted Brian Mc Nichol cruising the Howick zone. Brian buried the puck with a low shot that never left the ice. Peter Craig increased Blyth’s lead to 3-1 with the only second period goal with assists to Brian McNichol and Henry Bos. Blyth put the game out of reach five minutes into the third period with two quick goals. Brian Mc Nichol and Jason Rutledge set up Brad Anderson for Blyth’s fourth goal and then Henry Bos and Tim Cowan set up Blyth’s final goal as Ryan Chamney picked the puck off the backboards and stuffed it past the Howick goalie. Howick cut the lead to 5-2 with six minutes left in the game but Blyth’s defensive play smothered all oncoming Howick offensive rushes the rest of the way. It was a total team effort as Blyth earned a 5-2 win to claim the Guy Emerson Memorial Trophy as “D” Consolation Winners at the 1991 Goderich Lions Young Canada Week Pee Wee Tournament.
