THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 1991. PAGE 11. Sports Novices play Saturday On March 9 Blyth Novice Reps travelled to Teeswater to play in their annual Lions Novice Tourney. Their first game was against the Teeswater boys and they managed to pull off a 4-3 win. The goals for this game were scored by Jeremy Van Amersfoort, 2; Allan Gibbons, Jamie Black, one each; and assists going to Chris Carter, 3; Jeremy Van Amersfoort, Allan Gibbons and Kyle Anderson, one each. The boys took a much needed rest and received a lunch from the Lioness Club. They then faced off against a strong Lucknow team and were defeated 5-2. Jamie Black tallied both goals. with assists going to Jeremy Van Amersfoort, Kyle Anderson and Brent Sauve. Lucknow went on to win the tournament by defeating Belmore in the final. During ‘March Break’ the boys travelled to Belmore for an exhibi­ tion game. With a few of the boys still on vacation, Blyth’s bench was a little shy of manpower. This seemed to tire the boys quickly and Belmore won this game by a 6-0 score. This coming weekend the boys will be playing in the Blyth Lions Novice Tourney. Their first game is at 11 a.m. Saturday morning. Blyth Pee Wees win consolation title in Goderich BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees participated in the Goderich Lions Young Canada Week Pee Wee Tourna­ ment over the March Break. After a close 2-1 loss to Guelph Selects houseleague team in their opening game. Blyth responded with three straight wins to claim the ‘D’ Division Consolation Championship. Blyth opened the tournament on Tuesday, March 12 as they were shaded 2-1 by Guelph Selects. Guelph opened the scoring in the first period but Blyth tied the game with the only second period goal. Henry Bos fed Jason Rutledge the puck at centre ice T°son broke down the right wing boards before centering a pass into the slot which Mike Salverda had no problem converting into the tying goal. Guelph scored the winner mid­ way through the third and Blyth valiantly tried to tie the game but to no avail. Guelph hung on for a solid 2-1 win which sent Blyth into the Consolation round. Blyth met Flesherton in their second game of the tourney on Wednesday, March 13 with Brad Anderson notching the winner late in overtime for a 3-2 win. Brian McNichol opened the scor­ ing for Blyth with a nice solo rink length rush. Flesherton tied the game and then took a 2-1 lead in the first minute of the second period. Three minutes later Brian McNichol tied the game on a wrist shot after a set up from Christopher Howson and Benjie Hakkers. The defence of Peter Craig, Greg Toll, Shawn Hakkers and Jon Collins stood up well as the teams played a scoreless third period. Seven minutes and twenty-four seconds into overtime Brad Ander­ son provided the heroics as he pounced on a loose puck at the crease and, with the goalie sprawl­ ed on the ice, flipped a backhand shot into the twine. This 3-2 overtime win sent Blyth against Mildmay on Wednesday evening. In another tight checking game Blyth prevailed 2-1 to earn their way to the Championship game. Ryan Chamney opened the game scoring in the first period on a powerplay as he was set up in the slot perfectly by Brian McNichol. Mildmay notched a power play goal of their own as they tied the game in the second frame. Peter Craig scored the winner half way through the third. Brian McNichol won the face off to Tim Cowan who set up Craig’s shot from the point. Peter’s shot floated through the maze of players and past the Mildmay goaltender. The defence and goaltending held up the rest of the way as Blyth hung on for a 2-1 win. The Consolation Championship game was played on Friday, March 15 and Blyth completely dominated Howick in a 5-2 victory. Christopher Howson opened the scoring on a power play one and a half minutes into the game with Continued on page 12
