Blyth Atoms lose tournament semi-final The Blyth Atoms started their third round of group playoffs on the right foot by upsetting the tough Hensail team 3-2 in a nail-biter from start to finish in Hensail. This was a well-played hockey game with no goals scored until early in the third period when Hensail took a 1-0 lead. This however, was short-lived as Darryl Bromley tied the game for Blyth, assisted by Mark Wilson. At the 9:43 mark in the third period, Blyth took the lead 2-1 with Mark Wilson scoring, set up by Jeff Cowan and Michael Courtney. But at the 6:06 mark, Hensall tied the score 2-2. Blyth played super hockey the remainder of the game killing off a Hensall power-play late in the game, controlling Hensall’s top player Mark Bell. With 1:24 left in the game Mark “Sparky” Wilson lifted Blyth into the lead for the last time set up by Darryl Bromley and Michael Haggitt. Final score was Blyth 3, Hensall 2. Next home game this Sunday, March 17 in Blyth is at 7 p.m. BLYTH ATOMS IN BRUSSELS TOURNAMENT The Blyth Atoms opened the Brussels tournament and lost a 3-0 game to Howick. Blyth came out flat in this game and could not generate any offence. This loss put Blyth on the consolation side of the 16-team tournament. Saturday, Blyth met the Wingham B team and played a good third period to win this game 6-4. Blyth found themselves behind 2-1 going into the third period. A stubborn Wingham team went up 3-1 early in the third. This seemed to wake up the sleeping Blyth team. Blyth scored five straight goals in a four minute span to take a 6-3 lead. Wingham added one goal late to make the final 6-4 for Blyth. Mark “Sparky” Wilson lead this rally with three goals and two assists. Jeff Cowan scored one and set up two with linemate Michael Court ney adding one goal and one assist. Defenceman Greg Blok also scored one and set up one. This win put Blyth in semi-final action on Sunday against a strong team from Clifford. Blyth battled hard in this game but could not beat a hot Clifford goalie and could not get any breaks, losing this match 4-0. Despite the loss, Blyth played well in this game. ■ ASSOCIATE 6th k youRE'nv’tedT° OUR NNIVERSARY ONE DAY CASH AND CARRY ALE FRIDAY MARCH 22, 1991 7 A.M.
