HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1991-03-13, Page 2Optimists hold video contest Optimists International is spon­ soring its first ever Video Game Challenge and local clubs are inviting area youngsters to partici­ pate on March 23. Brussels Optimists are hosting the competition in the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Cen­ tre, while the Blyth Optimists are setting up in the Public School. Two groups of contestants from Grade one to four and five to eight will each have the opportunity to play three, three-minute games for - the combined total finishing score. The two top competitors of each group will receive a trophy and advance to the Southwestern com­ petition to be held next month in Blyth. The decision to hold this type of event was due to video games popularity. “All kids seem to like to play video games, so the clubs thought they might as well give this a try,’’ said Optimist Don Craw­ ford. “If it goes well, it will be an on-going event.” Plans for concert finalized Working up an appetite Beth Crawford serves hungry young players lined up for hot dogs following their game at the Brussels Optimist Atom Tournament on Saturday. The tournament continues this weekend with teams from as far away s Kitchener taking part. On Sunday, March 10 Pastor Gordon Bauman continued his message on the 23rd Psalm at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship. Elwin Garland was the worship leader. After the Christian Educa­ tion Hour a pot luck meal and time of fellowship was held in the Fellowship Hall. The Life Leaders and the Prayer and Praise Group met at the Church through the week. Sunday evening some of the Youth met to prepare for the Service Venture of volunteer work at the Welcome Inn, M.C.C. Centre in Hamilton, during the week. The ladies are looking forward to hearing Mary Mae Swartzentruber speak on Spir­ ituality at the next ladies meeting, March 19. Preparations are also being made for a concert featuring Ed­ ward Klassen who plays the South American Folk Harp. The concert will be held March 23 at the church. Brussels People March 1 - 5 was the Seaforth Girls Band trip to Phoenix, Ari­ zona. Joining them from Brussels were Jacquie Seili, Trish Duskocy, Debbie Seili and Max Demaray. The girls marched in the Phoenix Rodeo Parade at 70 degrees F. weather. About half the girls joined a bus tour to the Grand Canyon and saw the most spectacular view on a clear day you can imagine. Horseback riding in the desert, shopping, and the pool were other activities enjoyed by all. Debbie also enjoyed a short visit with sister city Standish friends staying outside of Phoenix as well. A big fat robin was sighted at the Long residence in Brussels on the morning of March 7. This being the middle of the March break, the Optimist club in Brussels knew parents might be ready for a break, so have planned an outing for youngsters for the afternoon. Today, (Wednesday) from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. there will be free skating for everyone at the Brus­ sels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. This is the first scheduled activity by the club as part of Optimist month. Men qualify for crib finals BY SANDRA JOSLING Qualifying for the Provincial Cribbage finals in Gananoque on March 23, are the Brussels Legion team of Gordon Nichol, Les Brew­ er, Eric Ross and Cam Ross. They placed third in the District Finals, on March 2 in Durham. Debbie Richardson, sponsored by the Brussels Legion competed March 2 at the Zone Youth Dart Finals in Kincardine. Debbie finished first in the Junior Singles and first in the Senior Doubles. Results from the Monday night darts are as follows: John Harrison, Alex Henderson, Paul Willie, first; Debbie Cann, Kitty Rutledge and Kathy Cochrane, second. High shooter for the ladies was Barb Fischer (116) and for the men Lawrence Machan (138). Darts are Euchre winners held every Monday night at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6 was euchre night at the Legion. The high lady was Beryl Smith and low lady, Lois Hart. High man was Alben Quipp and low man was Verna Tunney (playing as a man). Most lone hands for the ladies was Norma Coooper and for the men, Robert Walker. Thanks is extended to Doreen Rutledge for donating all the prizes for the evening. The next euchre will be Wednesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. The Majestic Women’s Institute held its March euchre party in the library on Monday evening with seven tables in play. The library was tastefully decorated for St. Patrick’s Day. Icy roads cause accidents Icy roads resulted in two single vehicle accidents in Morris town­ ship last Thursday. Wingham OPP say an elderly Guelph couple were taken to Wing­ ham and District Hospital by ambulance after their 1984 Olds Cutlass slid out of control on Highway 4, just a short distance north of County Road 16, at 11:55 a.m. Driver of the car, Pearl Hendry, 73, and her husband Robert, 72, were travelling south on 4 at an unknown speed when the car began to slide, OPP say. The car came to a stop after striking a tree on residential property. Mr. and Mrs. Hendry both sustained major injuries as a result. The car was demolished. At 3:15 p.m., a southbound car driven by Charlene Franken, 30 of Brussels, went out of control on the icy road surface of County Road 12, entered the west ditch and rolled. Police report Mrs. Franken was not injured and her 1978 Ford LTD sustained severe damage. The prize winners were: high lady, Kate Wilson; low lady, Isabel Adams; high man. Garner Nichol­ son; low man, Bill Craig; birthday nearest St. Patrick’s Day, Chester Higgins; person wearing the most green, Iona McLean; travelling lone hand prize, Doris McCall; lucky tally, Jim Smith, Jean Bridge, Alice Nicholson and Vera Scouller. Friday, March 15 is Pub Night at the Brussels Legion. The fun is to begin at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Sunday, March 17 will be a St. Patrick’s Day Ribs and Kraut dinner at the Brussels Legion. Supper will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
