Roy Williamson Road Supperintendent Township of Grey Hydro completes conversion Hydro plans to convert one of the province’s two remaining areas of 25-cycle electrical service to 60 cycles. The conversion will affect a number of mining companies near the communities of Timmins. Kirk land Lake and Sudbury. The coi- poration has asked for an order-in- council to carry out the conversion. “Most of the 25-cycle equipment is over 50 years old and is nearing the end of its useful life”, says Bud Barrett, director of Hydro’s North eastern Region. The conversion will lower cus tomers bills through improved efficiency and reliability: the pro vincial electrical system, and there fore all customers, benefit from a 20- megawatt increase in hydro electric generating capacity and a 21- megawatt reduction in peak demand because of lower line losses. The 41-megawatt gain is equiva lent to the peak demand of the city the size of Orillia. In the 1950s. Hydro converted most of the province from 25 cycles to 60 cycles.
