Warwick, Lewington rinks win bonspiel The Brussels Curling Club host­ ed a mixed bonspiel on Saturday, March 2. There were 80 curlers participating. Missed! Brussels Novice goalie Stephen Oldfield moves to stop the puck during this playoff game against Drayton on Friday night. The visitors outmaneuvered the home team, defeating them 5-0. The 10 a.m. draw was sponsored by McDonald Home Hardware and Lumber along with Doane Ray­ mond Pannell. Blyth Atoms win another series The Blyth Atoms started their second round of W.O.A.A. group playoffs Feb. 27 in Blyth defeating a stubborn Seaforth team 5-3. Michael Courtney started the scoring early in this game assisted by Mike Ansley, but Seaforth tied the score minutes later. Mark ‘Sparky’ Wilson tallied Bhth’s second goal early in the second period, set up by Darryl Bromley and David Craig, but once again Seaforth replied tying the score 2-2. Blyth scored the next three goals to take a 5-2 lead. Jeff Cowan assisted by Michael Courtney and Jeff Ferguson and Michael Haggitt scoring two goals, both set up by linemate Darryl Bromley. Seaforth finished the game with a last minute goal and the final score read 5-3 for Blyth. Scott Bromley played goal for Blyth and came up with some big saves late in the game for Blyth. BLYTH 3, SEAFORTH 1 Blyth returned to Seaforth for a late Friday night game on March 1 and came home with a hard fought 3-1 overtime win. No goals were scored until 7:08 of the third period, when Blyth finally beat a hot Seaforth goalie Adam Nolan. Darryl Bromley scored what ap­ peared to be the winning goal in a goalmouth scramble for Blyth. However Seaforth rallied to tie the game 1-1 with nine seconds left in the third period on a power-play. David Craig cashed in Blyth’s winning goal in overtime, assisted by Michael Haggitt and Darryl Bromley. Michael Haggitt scored Blyth’s third goal for insurance, set up by Michael Courtney, leaving the hockey game 3-1 for Blyth in overtime. Scott Bromley played a super game in net for Blyth. BLYTH 8, SEAFORTH 2 The following day Saturday, March 2, these two teams met again, but this time Blyth skated and passed to an easy 8-2 win. Jeff Cowan led the scoring attack with three goals and one assist. Blyth Tykes lose out at Lucknow tournament Blyth Tykes travelled to Lucknow on the weekend to play in the tournament held on March 2. Their first game of the day was against Howick. The end score of the game was Howick 5 and Blyth 3. Matt Anderson scored all three goals for Blyth. After the first game Blyth enjoy­ ed Lucknow’s hospitality and were treated to hot dogs and chocolate milk as they rested in preparation for their next game against Tees- water. Blyth defeated Teeswater 7-3 to put themselves in the consolation playoffs. Goals were scored for Blyth by Cole Stewart and Matt Anderson. The final game found Blyth playing Ripley who defeated Blyth by a score of 5-3. Blvth goals were scored by Jeff Carter and Matt Anderson. Ryan Lee once again held down the fort in net for Blyth and did an excellent job as did all the rest of the team. Many fans and parents turned out in support of their Tykes and all enjoyed the effort put forth by the Blyth Tykes who went home with banners from the Lucknow Legion Branch and Lucknow Minor Sports. Darryl Bromley scored two and assisted on one with Michael Haggitt also picking up three points, one goal and two asissts. Michael Courtney tallied Blyth’s last two goals with Mark “Sparky” Wilson adding two assists. Aman­ da Anderson, Jeff Ferguson and David Craig helped the cause setting up goals for Blyth. Seaforth scored two late goals in the game for an 8-2 final. Scott Bromley did a fine job in net for Blyth again with some solid defence from Ronnie Abel-Rinn, Greg Blok, Jeff Ferguson, Michael Ansley and Mark Wilson. The Blyth Atoms will take part in the Brussels Atom Tournament this weekend with a Friday night con­ test against Howick at 6:30 p.m. Sprouts win Continued from Page 15 boys had a much tougher game as they just beat Howick 6-5. Goal scorers were Brian Oldfield with three goals, lan Thompson with two goals and Chris Coulter with one goal. This advanced Brussels to the championship final against Bel­ grave. Belgrave led after the first period 1-0, but Brussels exploded in the final two periods to win 5-1. Goal scorers were Ian Thompson with two goals, and single goals by Steven Todd, Brian Oldfield and Andy Vanbeek. It was a very hard played tournament by all players.
