In the play, a touring production from Montreal’s Centaur Theatre, Thami (played by Michael Ed­ wards), a leading member of an activist group, is brought to the debating podium in a competition with a white African girl, Isabel (Soo Garay). Seeing potential in his gifted student, Thami’s teacher Mr. M. (Errol Slue) brings the two teens together for another competi­ tion, this time as members on the same team. A special friendship develops between the two stu­ dents, buf it then begins to break down under the pressure of cultural differences and political conflict. Tension escalates as anti-apartheid supporters seek a solution to end the racial oppression around them. Will it be through violence or peace that a solution is found? Athol Fugard is a native of South Africa, considered by many to be the greatest playwright now writ­ ing in English. A passionate artist and vehement supporter of a non-violent end to apartheid, his earliest plays illuminate the com­ plexities of human relationships within the contest of his homeland. He had withdrawn from the political scene for some years but has now returned with renewed vigour. “My Children! My Arica!” Mr. Fugard said, “Is my lament.
