Crusaders swept by Kings Brussels Atoms win 2 Last Friday, 22 Crusaders tra­ velled to Kincardine for the third game of their playoff series trailing 2-0 in the series. The only scoring of the first period was done by the Kings as they potted two goals to take a 2-0 lead after one period. Kincardine took a 4-0 lead before the Crusaders got on to the scoreboard when Trev Pocaluyko and Jeff Espensen drew assists on Blyth Atoms sweep Milverton On Monday, Feb. 18 the Blyth Atoms started their group playoffs in the W.O.A.A. by out-scoring the opposition 7 to 4 in Milverton. Mark “Sparky” Wilson picked up a hat-trick for Blyth with Jeff Cowan scoring two. Singles went to Darryl Bromley and Michael Court­ ney. Picking up assists on these goals were Mike Ansley, Michael Haggitt, Ronnie Abel-Rinn, Greg Blok, Amanda Anderson and Trent Richmond. BLYTH 3 - MILVERTON 1 The Milverton Atoms travelled to Blyth on Wednesday, Feb. 20, hoping to t?e the series up, but Blyth dashed these hopes with a solid team effect. Shane Burkholder made a super save early in this game and Jeff Cowan returned down the ice and a Brian Ten Pas goal. Brussels cut the lead to two just over three minutes later when Jason Goodall scored on a play set up by Ten Pas and David Montgomery. However, the Kings scored once more before the period ended to take a 5-2 lead after two periods. Kincardine regained their four goal lead with the first goal of the third period. The Crusaders came back to make it a three-goal game scored, assisted by Michael Court­ ney. Blyth went up 2-0 with some hard work. Scott Bromley cashed in on some comer digging by Michael Haggitt and Darryl Bromley. Blyth took a commanding 3-0 lead mid­ way in the third period when Mike Ansley drifted a long blue-line blast past the Milverton goalie on a pass from Darryl Bromley. Milver­ ton scored late in this game, but Blyth showed some good defence and goaltending, holding onto the 3-1 win. BLYTH 4 - MILVERTON 3 The Blyth Atoms put three solid games of hockey together and eliminated the Milverton team last Saturday, Feb. 23, by defeating them 4-3 in Blyth. This game was a real battle with the opposition scoring 10 seconds into the game. However, Michael Courtney tied when Goodall set up Dave Harding for the goal, but that was as close as they would get as the Kings added another goal to make the final score 7-3. The victory gave Kincardine a series sweep 3-0. This ends the season for the Crusaders but they will return a stronger team next season and take another run at a championship season. the score 1-1 minutes later for Blyth, set up by Jeff Cowan. Milverton scored early in the second period, but once again Blyth battled back tying the game 2-2. This time Darryl Bromley scored on a power-play assisted by Trent Richmond and Michael Hag­ gitt. After a 10-minute break, Milver­ ton came out flying, and again went ahead, four minutes into the third period. With 3:58 left in the hockey game, Michael Haggitt tied the game once again, 3-3 on a pretty passing play from Darryl Bromley and Jeff Ferguson. Michael Court­ ney scored the game winner on a blast set up by Jeff Cowan on a power-play with 1:16 left in the game. Blyth hung on to the 4-3 lead displaying good defence through­ out the series and solid goaltending by Shane Burkholder. Brussels Atom Houseleague team finished their regular season and started the playoffs in the same way: winning. Saturday the team finished the regular season with a 4-3 win over Zurich. Scott Clarkson scored two unassisted first period goals to give Brussels a lead it never relinquish­ ed. Zurich returned with one goal in the second period to draw closer •,but Leslie Elliott scored from Amber Ruttan and Adam Carr to restore the lead. Amber Ruttan scored from Leslie Elliott to give Brussels a 4-1 lead before Zurich scored two late goals to make the score close. Sunday the team started the playoffs with a 3-2 overtime win Brussels Sprouts perfect. Brussels Sprouts travelled to Clifford on the weekend for a Sprout Tournament and came home with a perfect 3-0. Friday the Sprouts faced a tough Drayton team. Brussels opened the scoring as Chris Coulter, on a pass from lan Thompson, scored at 19:20. Matt McCall scored an unassisted goal at 15:32. Drayton’s Marc Ghazema scored two quick goals to tie the score. However Robbie Kerr scored from Ian Thompson at 9:22 the final goal came off the stick of Ian Thompson from Andy Vanbeek at 4:28 to give the Brussels Sprouts a 4-2 victory. Saturday the Sprouts beat Walk­ erton 16-0. Andy Vanbeek scored three goals; Chris Coulter scored three goals; Brian Oldfield scored seven goals; and lan Thompson over Goderich No. 2, backed by the excellent goaltending of Corey Campbell. Brussels scored its only goal of regulation time in the first period when Adam Carr scored from Amber Ruttan and Leslie Elliott. That lead held up until there were only 18 seconds left in the game when Goderich scored to tie the score. In the overtime period Goderich scored first to take the lead. But with just 1:19 left in the period Amber Ruttan scored from Brett Fischer and Clint Fischer to tie the score. With just 49 seconds left Scott Clarkson scored from Adam Carr and Corey Bragg to give Brussels the win. scored three goals. Sunday the Sprouts had a tough game with Listowel. Chris Coulter opened the scoring at 18:50. However Shawn Henry tied the score at 18:53 of the second. Ian Thompson gave the Sprouts a 2-1 lead, but Listowel came storming back to score as Matthew George scored at 7:37. End-to-end action followed as Phil Affolton made many, many super saves. But with 1:50 remaining Brian Oldfield scored the game-winning goal as Brussels defeated Listowel 3-2. The boys played a very good tournament with all players giving 110 per cent. This weekend the Sprouts travel to Lucknow for another tourna­ ment.
