Bulls sweep best of 5 series against Grand Valley team Lalling down on the job The Grand Valley goalie throws himself in front of the net to stop a play by this Brussels Bulls player during the first period of the team’s opening playoff game last Wednesday. The Bulls dominated the best out of five series winning all three of the games played. Schools from Blyth and Hullett, as well as Clinton, Seaforth, Vanastra and Brucefield took part. lose series HENSALL 6 -BLYTH 3 The Blyth Atoms travelled to Hensail on Monday, February 4 and dropped a 6-3 decision to the home club. Hensail took a 2-1 lead in the playoff series. Hensall scored early in this game but Blyth controlled the first period, scoring two and missing many more. With a 10-minute break between the first and second period, Blyth came out with a 2-1 lead and watched it disappear falling into penalty problems again. The second half of the game belonged to Hensall as Blyth could not get their game together. The line of Jeff Cowan, Mike Ansley and Michael Courtney connected for all three Blyth goals. The Blyth Atoms took to the ice on Wednesday, February 6 in a must-win game for Blyth. Darryl Bromley got Blyth started early in this game scoring Blyth’s first goal, assisted by Mike Ansley. However, Hensall came back with two goals late in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. Mark (Sparky) Wilson, called up from the blueline to centre the third line, fired in two unassisted goals for Blyth and set up Mike Ansley for three straight goals for Blyth. Blyth again seemed to have the hockey game under control in the second half, with a 4-2 lead. Once again, though, many penal­ ties cost Blyth. as Hensall rallied late in the game, scoring two goals in the last 1:42 seconds, to force overtime. Blyxh lost the game in overtime being out-scored 2-1 in 10 minutes after once again drawing three straight penalties. Jeff Cowan scored Blyth’s fifth goal, assisted by Mike Ansley late in the fourth period, but Blvth failed to tie the hockey game. The final score was Hensall 6, Blyth 5. Hats off to the Blyth Atoms who battled hard against a very strong team from Hensall. Blvth will take to the ice Wednesday. February 13 at 6:30 in Seaforth to finish league play before regrouping for the next playoff series. Wednesday saw the start of a new season for the Brussels Bulls as they faced off against Grand Valley in a best of five series. Brett Long opened the scoring on a pass from Jason Baier at 14’;28, a power play marker. At 10:50 Paul Brophy scored on a pass from Greg McNevan and Corey McKee. The final goal of the first period came off the stick of Steve Fritz on a pass from Jeff McKe<? and Steve Michi? at 3:56. At 15:15 of the second period Marty Rutledge scored from Jeff McKee. Twenty-eight seconds later Jeff McKee scored from Rutledge and King. Sam Kulafoski scored at 4:40 to give the Bulls a 6-0 lead after two periods. Murray Skeritt broke the score­ less game for Grand Valley at 15:00 with assists going to Bruce Richardson and Chad Campbell. Sam Kulafoski scored a short- handed goal at 14:16. Darryl Rooney closed out the scoring at 4:07 and game one goes to the Bulls 7-2. Saturday saw the Bulls travel to Grand Valley for Game Two. Scott White opened the scoring for Grand Valley at 15:47, a short- handed goal. White scored again at 7:26 from Chad Campbell and Murray Skerritt. The Bulls got on the score sheet at 5:45 as Jeff McKee scored a powerplay goal on a pass from Steve Fritz and Marty Rutledge. Jeff tied the score with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 2:12 to close out the scoring in the first with the teams tied at two. The only goal of the second period came off the stick of Jeff McKee, another shorthanded goal with an assist going to Marty Rutledge at 6:52. The Bulls exploded in the third for six unanswered goals. Marty Rutledge scored at 19:38 on a pass from Jeff McKee and Stev£' Fritz. Blyth Pee Wees clinch series BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees eliminated Hensall last week as they won 2-0 in Hensall on Monday, February 4 and then clinched the series at home on Wednesday, February 6 with a convincing 8-4 win. The pivotal third game in Hen­ sall saw Blyth control the tempo of the game even though it didn’t show on the scoreboard. After a scoreless first period Christopher Howson scored one of Blyth’s most important goals of the year midway through period two. He opened the scoring as he took Mike Salverda’s pass at centre ice and zig-zagged through the Hensall defence before deking the goalie out of position. Blyth upped the count to 2-0 with 17 seconds left in the second frame. Ryan Chamney gave the puck to Henry Bos at the blueline. Henry’s low drive was stopped by the goalie but Brian McNichol pounced on the rebound to record the power play insurance goal. The teams played a scoreless third as Chris Lee went the distance between the pipes to record the shutout in this 2-0 win, giving Blyth a 2-1 series lead. Back in Blyth on Wednesday, Jason Rutledge scored two goals in the first 36 seconds of the game to lead Blyth to victory. Blyth built an early 6-0 second period lead before coasting the rest of the wav in this 8-4 victory. Other goal scorers for Blyth were Benjie Hakkers with two, Henry Bos, Brad Anderson, Christopher Howson and Ryan Chamney, with a short-handed effort. Jeff Doulgas scored at 14:38 from Greg Mc­ Nevan and Corey McKee. Newly signed player Tim Tyerell scored from Brian Zabel and Steve Fritz at 10:28. Steven Fritz notched a power play goal at 7:34 with assists going to Marty Rutledge and Corey McKee. Marty Rutledge completed his hat-trick at 2:13 of the third with assists going to Greg McNevan and Steve Fritz. The final score read Brussels 9, Grand Valley 2. The Bulls take a stranglehold on the series as game three goes in Brussels Sunday. A penalty-filled game was on tap for Sunday. Steve Fritz opened the scoring at 15:58, a power-play marker with assists going to Marty Rutledge and Jeff McKee. Ron Strome closed out the scoring in period one at 11:27 on a pass from Joe Walker and Brett Long. The Bulls had a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Grand Valley scored at 19:07 as Chad Campbell scored on a pass from Rob McCorey and Glenn Watt. Jeff Douglas gets that goal back at 10:39 from Paul Brophy and Bevin Flett. Steve Fritz scored a short-handed goal at 7:36 with assists going to Marty Rutledge and Bevin Flett. Ron Coulgar got that goal back at 6:40. However, Paul Brophy scored an unassisted, short-handed goal at 6:20. Ron Conglar scored on a pass from Glenn Watt and Bruce Richardson at 5:10, a powerplay goal. Scott White scored a short- handed goal at 2:15 to make the score 5-4 for Brussels after two periods. As in previous games the Bulls have had strong third periods. Ron Strome scored a power play goal at 10:58 on a pass from Jeff Douglas and Bevin Flett. Paul Brophy notched a short-hand­ ed goal at 9:58 with an assist from Sam Kulafofski. Jason Baier blast­ ed a shot past the Grand Valley goalie with assists going to Marty Rutledge and Jeff McKee. The Bulls defeated Grand Valley 8-4 and take the series three games to one. The Bulls will await the winner of the Goderich - Mt. Forest series. In this three game series the Bulls scored seven power-play goals and an amazing eight short-handed goals.
