Local company loses contract by $29 and one vote A local company lost out on a contract with Huron County Roads Department by $29 and one vote of county council. The contract for the purchase of a 55 h.p. industrial tractor was awarded to Logan Farm Tractor Sales after a vote of 15-14 failed to overturn the recommendation of the Roads Committee. Logan’s bid had been $18,593.43, $28.78 better than the second-place tender of McGavin Farm Supply of Walton. But because Logan is located in Perth County while McGavin’s are a Huron company some members of council felt the lowest tender shouldn’t be accepted and the contract should go to the local company given the tiny difference in the tenders. Jack Coleman, Deputy Reeve of Stanley township led the argument as he had in the Road Committee when the commit tee debated for an hour before deciding to recommend council go with the lowest tender. Reeve Coleman argued that with such a low price difference the business should be kept in the county. He was supported by Lionel Wilder of Hay Township who pointed out that the extra travel required for serving the equipment might easily eat up any saving on the tender for the out of county supplier. Denis Merrall, County Engineer, replied that while he was perfectly happy to go with the McGavin bid, he did worry about the potential backlash from neighbouring coun ties if they felt Huron was favour ing its own companies even when they didn’t have the lowest ten ders. “It’s a very political decision but there are consequences to it”, he said. Grant Stirling, Reeve of Goder ich Township noted there are several large equipment dealers in Huron who bid on contracts in other counties and if the other counties decided to punish Huron firms “we might end up with egg on our face.” Reeve Wilder tried to have the issue sent back to committee but that motion was lost. On the recorded vote to support the pur chase from Logan, the issue carried by a 15-14 total. Contact AITLAND ALLEY FINANCIAL CONSULTANTS LIMITED Murray Siddall C.L.U.
