Blyth Atoms tie and win in week’s play Novice Houseleaguers split games BLYTH 2, ELMA-LOGAN 2 On Tuesday, January 22 the Blyth Atoms travelled to Elma- Logan and skated to a 2-2 draw. The host team took an early lead in this game, with Blyth tying the score 1-1 late in the first period with Darryl Bromley’s unassisted effort. Elma-Logan replied with their second goal late in the second period in this close checking game. Four minutes remaining in the game Jeff Cowan evened the score 2-2 on a setup by Amanda Ander­ son and Michael Courtney. The goaltending was strong in this game with Shane Burkholder doing the job for Blyth. BLYTH 7, BRUSSELS 4 Saturday, January 26 Blyth Atoms played Brussels in an exhi­ bition hockey game as both teams are preparing for tough play-off Brussels Sprouts just keep on winning Saturday the Brussels Sprouts defeated Goderich 8-0. Brian Oldfield opened the scor­ ing on a pass from Robert Keer and Nolan Krotz. Chris Coulter scored on a pass from Steve Todd. Nolan Krotz scored on a nice three-way passing play with assists going to Steve Todd and Chris Coulter. Robert Keer scored on a pass from Ian Thompson and Ken action. With many Blyth players return­ ing to the lineup, Blyth displayed some good passing and skating and upset a strong Brussels team 7-4. Four Blyth players tallied three- point games. Darryl Bromley had two goals and one assist; Michael Haggitt, Michael Ansley and Mark Wilson, all with one goal and two assists. Single goals went to Trent Richmond and Jeff Cowan. Shane Burkholder, Greg Blok and Ronnie Abel-Rinn also picked up assists. Scott Bromley did the job between the pipes for Blyth. Blyth will take on another tough hockey club - Hensall. in the first round of playoffs. First home game will be Wednesday, January 30 at 6 p.m.’Blyth showed a super team effort in the Brussels game and hope to continue this type of hockey into the playoffs. McCallum. Ian Thompson then scored on a pass from Brian Oldfield. Brian Oldfield got his second goal from Phil Offolton and Robert Keer. Brian Oldfield completed his hat-trick on a pass from Matt McCall. Andy Vanbeek recorded the shut-out for the Sprouts. This weekend the Sprouts face-off against Zurich at 9:00 in B. M. & G. arena. On January 19 the Blyth Novice Houseleague team travelled to Hensall to play the league’s stron­ gest team. Despite losing 6-1, the boys came up with a solid perfor­ mance against the tough Hensall team. Blyth’s Shawn Bromley had a great game in net, being tested time after time. Blyth’s lone goal was scored by Tyler Stewart assist­ ed by Nathan Shannon and Ross Clark. BERLENA FINGLAND Mrs. Berlena Fingland died at Brookhaven Nursing Home in Wingham on Saturday, January 26, 1991. She was 99 years of age. Born in East Wawanosh town­ ship on February 24, 1891, Mrs. Fingland was the daughter of the late Joseph Johnston and the former Jane Ann Elliott. She was predeceased by her husband Colin Fingland. A member of Wingham United Church, she was an accom­ plished soloist during her years as a member of the church choir. Mrs. Fingland was the beloved aunt of Iona McLean of Brussels and Ken Johnston of Blyth. She was predeceased by her sister Annie Johnston, and three bro­ thers: Robert, Jack and Clarence. Rev. Rae Grant conducted the funeral service and committal at Beattie-Falconer Funeral Home - Tasker Chapel in Blyth at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 28.
