The short-handed Monkton team found it tough to keep up and the home team came on strong defeating them 11-3. CL Bulls bury Black Hawks Friday the Brussels Bulls closed out their road season on a winning note as they downed Walkerton 11-2 in Midwestern Jr. C. hockey action. Bulls have played very well on the road this year as they only host one game and tied two in 15 games. Brett Long opened the scoring at 16:17 with assists going to Ron Strome and Samim Kulafofski. Walkerton got that goal back at 9:21 as Daryl Faust scored on a pass from Jeff Morrsion. Two minutes later Sam Kulafofski scor­ ed from Ron Strome and Brett Long at 7:35. Brussels closed out the scoring in the first as Jeff Douglas scored with assists going to Jason Baier and Greg McNevan at 5:28. The Bulls did all the scoring in the second as Joe Walker notched his first goal of the year, a power play marker at 17:24. Jeff Jewitt scored at 16:15 with assists going to Shawn Chipchase and Brett Martin. Brett Long scored at 15:11 on a pass from Steve Vandendool. Shawn Chipchase notched a goal at 11:21 with assists going to Brett Martin and Jeff Jewitt. Chipchase scored again to close out the second period that was dominated by the Bulls. Assisting on the goal were Jeff Jewitt and Jason Baier at 2:56. Walkerton’s Kevin Ball opened the scoring in the third as he scored on a pass from Vince Wand at 15:51. Greg McNevan got that goal back with 1:48 left in the game on a pass from Jeff McKee and Craig Farmers throw rocks at Brussels bonspiel The Brussels Curling Club host­ ed a Farmer’s Bonspiel on January 21. The sponsors were Brussels Livestock Inc., Cook’s and Brussels Agromart. Dave Wheeler presented the first place team with vests donated by Cook’s. This team with 51.75 points was Doug Rathwell, Steve Rath- well, Mark Perkin and Rick Gra­ ham. Second prize with 39 points went to Dave Trafford, Doug McCulloch, Jim Hoy and Norm Vessie. In third place with 38.25 points was the team of Ross Engel, Rudy Plug, Lloyd Drummond and Isaac Martin. Fourth with 35 points went to Cliff Campbell, Don Riehl, Bob Packham and Mike Riehl. Fifth place with 29 points was won by Orval Bauer, Mervyn Bauer. Ken King. Brett Long completed his hat-trick at 1:08 with assists going to Samim Kulafofski and Ron Strome. With just six seconds remaining, Long scored again on a pass from Corey McKee to round out the scoring. Sunday afternoon saw the slump­ ing Goderich Sailors visit the Bulls in Brussels. Goderich jumped into the lead as Daryl Drunin scored from Steve Carroll and Jason McNichol at 14:37. Richard Bow­ man scored from Jason McNichol and Daryl Durnin at 12:37. The Bulls got on the scoreboard as Jeff McKee scored from Marty Rutledge and Shawn Chipchase at 2:50. However, Goderich’s Richard Bowman scored 25 seconds later to give Goderich a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. At 18:45 of the second Paul Brophy scored on a pass from Jeff Douglas and Greg McNevan. Daryl Durnin restored Goderich’s two- goal lead at 6:40, but a short-hand­ ed goal with 50 seconds left in the second made it a one-goal game as Jeff McKee scored from Marty Rutledge. The Bulls awoke in the third as Jeff McKee completed the hat-trick with assists going to Rutledge and Chipchase at 15:34. One minute later Brett Long scored a power play goal with assists going to Ron Strome. Jeff Doulgas scored at 11:13 on a nice three-way passing play from Paul Brophy and Greg McNevan. With 8:26 remaining Samim McDonald and Doc Stephenson. Sixth place went to Jim Patterson, Harvey Machan, Merv Quipp, Bill Quipp and Walter Bosch. Seventh prize was won by Ken Dalton, Doug Sholdice, Joe Terp- stra, Paul McCallum. Neil Beuer- man and Ken Higgins. Eighth place went to Kelly Dalton, Gary McNichol. Bill Webster and Harold McCallum. For the 11 a.m. draw, Merle Hoegy and Harry Brindley presen­ ted the prizes. Brussels Agromart donated vests for the first place winners of this draw. This team with 53.25 points was the winner for the Overall Trophy for the day. They were Ernie Lewington, Tom Warwick. Brian Warwick and Glen Warwick. This weekend the Bulls close out the regular schedule against Wing­ ham Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the B. M. & G. arena. Saturday the league banquet is being held in Grand Valley. The Bulls have several players nomi­ nated for the awards. Jeff McKee’s 26 goals, 31 assists and 57 points should be plenty to make him this year’s Rookie of the year. Jeff is also nominated for the most sports­ manlike player of the league as Jeff has received only 20 penalties in 29 games. Marty Rutledge will top scorer award for year in a row as he has accumulat­ ed 33 goals and 32 assists - 65 points in 28 games this season. Marty is also nominated as the league’s Most Valuable Player. The Bulls will likely open their first playoff series Wednesday, Feb. 6 at. 9 p.m. at B. M. & G. arena against Mt. NO ATC'S in in as BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Legion Pee Wees completed their regular schedule last week as they came from behind at home to edge Stephen Township 3-2 and travelled to Mitchell where they dominated the Mitchell II team 5-1. They also recorded a win by forfeit as, a week earlier, Wingham II refused to play the locals in a scheduled game Wingham. It was a very physical game Blyth on Monday, January 21 Stephen Township built a 2-0 early second period lead before Blyth wore the visitors down in the third in a comeback 3-2 win. Ryan Chamney and Jason Rut­ ledge recorded the assists on Brian McNichol’s power play goal to cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the second period. Peter Craig and Brad Anderson assisted on the tying goal six minutes into the third as Peter’s shot deflected into the net off the skate of Benjie Hakkers. Benjie Hakkers then recorded the winner with six minutes left in the game as the redirected Henry Bos’s backhand shot past the goalie. Christopher Howson also assisted on the goal as he set up Henry’s shot from near the blue- line. This 3-2 win was a direct result of the work ethic of the team as they played with enthusiasm and tena­ city as they out-worked the opposi­ tion. Against Mitchell II, Blyth scored the only first period goal with Jason Rutledge’s forechecking resulting in the assist on Brad Anderson’s goal. A bad bounce in the Blyth zone resulted in Mitchell’s only goal of the game in the final minute of the second period but Blylh iced the win with three unanswered third period markers. Benjie Hakkers and Christopher Howson assisted on Blyth’s third goal as Ryan Chamney poked in a loose puck from amongst a crowd of players near the Mitchell goal crease. Mike Salverda increased the lead to 4-1 as his shot trickled across the goal line after a set up from Ryan Chamney and Jon Collins. Christopher Howson completed the scoring as he deflected Peter Craig’s low shot high into the top shelf from in close. This 5-1 win, coupled with Wingham H’s refusal to play Blyth, completed the regu­ lar schedule for the Pee Wees. Playoffs start this week as they play Hensall in a best three out of five opening round series.
