Maitland Presbyterial WMS meets in Wingham The Women’s Missionary Socie­ ties of Maitland Presbyterial held their annual meeting on January 21 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Wingham. Mrs. Isobel Arbuckle, president, opened the meeting with a poem “With a song of the world’’, followed by prayer to convene the meeting. Mrs. Hazel Bateman was pianist for the hymns. Mrs. Shirley Donaldson welcomed everyone to St. Andrew’s Church. The roll call was answered by 41 members. Mrs. Marjory Wall gave a very successful treasurer’s report, with some groups exceeding their allo­ cation. The reports of the various secre­ taries were given. Mrs. Irlma Haldenby told of the weekend she spent at the Ladies’ Camp at Camp Kintail in June. Mrs. Arbuckle reported for the Presbytery Con­ gregational Life Committee, espe­ cially concerning Youth Groups and Sunday Schools. Rev. Hugh Nu­ gent, Ripley, will lead this commit­ tee for 1991. Rev. John Vaudry brought greetings from Bruce- Maitland Presbytery and expressed gratitude for the work accomplish­ ed by the women of the W.M.S. Following lunch, a video entitled “New Hope in Central America’’, telling of the people, countries, religion, and the problems being faced daily. The theme of the afternoon session was “Caring for God’s World”. The devotions, prepared by Mrs. Isabel Thompson, were given by Irlma Haldenby. The scripture was taken from Genesis, chapter 1, verses 27-31, and Gene­ sis 2, verses 17 and 18. The meditation dealt with God, the master craftsman in creating the earth, and we must take good care of it. Following prayer we sang “O Day of God draw nigh”. Mrs. Harmon of Teeswater, gave the Offertory Prayer. Evelyn Murdoch, Area Educational Consultant, con­ ducted a Goal Questionnaire with Mrs. Marion Mundell, Mrs. Fran­ ces Nugent, Mrs. Agnes Bregman, and Mrs. Margaret Keith as lea­ ders of four groups. Miss Evelyn Murdoch gave an interesting talk on the highlights of her work. Plans for the Children’s Rally at Camp Kintail were dis­ cussed. Mrs. David Ireland will convene the committee to plan the Rally. It was decided to send a child to Summer Camp. Hamilton-Lon­ don Synodical will be held on April 16 and 17 in Chedoke Presbyterian Church, Hamilton. The Presbyter­ ial will be held on May 6, in Chalmer’s Presbyterian Church, Whitechurch. Brussels 11:15a.m. United holds annual meeting The annual meeting of Brussels United Church was held on Sun­ day, January 27, following the morning service. It began with a pot luck sandwich luncheon and there were 45 in attendance. The Reverend Cam McMillan’s message noted the accomplishment of a major rebuilding of the rear part of the church basement. It now includes a new office for the Minister, a relocated and enlarged kitchen and other improvements to existing facilities. Fourteen young people became church members by profession of faith. There were 10 baptisms and the church membership now stands at 365. A moment’s silence was held in memory of those members who had died during the past year. There were increases in weekly offerings, contributions to the Mis­ sionary and Service Fund, and generous support given to the Building Fund. The United Church Women had an active year with interesting monthly meetings and service within the church and community. The Church School noted a good response to the “Whole People of God” curriculum which is geared to today’s busy family life styles. The Wednesday Morning Group reported a most successful Child­ ren’s Christmas Bazaar. Several suggestions put forth during the course of the meeting will be looked into by the various church committees during the 1991 year. The Clerk of Session is Alma Watson and Merle Hoegy is trea­ surer. Elders are Betty Graber, Betty Campbell, Ralph Watson, Ruth Sauve, Alma Watson, Ken Barbour, Bob Richmond, Kathy Workman, David Boynton and Mel McCutcheon. Committee of Steward members are Bruce Hahn, Stephen Betts, Audrey Cardiff, Jean Bridge, Susan Gowing and Merle Hoegy. The proposed budget for 1991 is set at $53,495 and Bob Richmond, Harold Steffler and Mabel Willis are the auditors for the coming year. Carol Long is the incoming Central Treasurer for the pastoral charge. William Beacom and Ruth Sauve were given a vote of thanks for their work for the past several years on the Pastoral Charge and Audit Committees. The Minister and his wife were thanked for their contributions to Brussels United Church and the congregation over the past year. Rev. Paul Ross officiated. Maid of Honor was Lori Charter, and best man was Bruce Bole. Bridesmaids were Cathy Mustard, Marlene Kernick and Jennifer Frood. Ushers were Mark Horner, Kevin Tamblyn, and Peter Bole. A reception and dance was held at the Candlelight Restaurant in Goder­ ich. The couple are residing in Warren, Ontario. The annual business meeting was held on Tuesday evening at the Church. On Friday evening after the regular service at the Nursing Home, the congregation gathered at the Church for a “Fun Night”. Progressive crokinole, videos, and games in the gymnasium provided activities for various age groups. Saturday morning the men gather­ ed at the Golden Lantern Restau­ rant in Brussels for the monthly Men’s Breakfast. Tom Warner, guest from Port Rowan, spoke to the group. Tobogganning and skat­ ing were on the agenda Saturday afternoon with everyone joining at the Church for a pot luck supper and fellowship later. The Youth stayed for a special evening’s program. At the Sunday morning Church Service. Tom Warner brought the message entitled, “Letting Go To Take Hold”, based on the scripture Phillipians 3: 1-16. One has to release himself from his old self (or from his past) before he can surge forward in a new life for Christ. Linda Campbell was worship leader this Sunday. A fellowship lunch was held again after the service. The Youth had the regular weekly meeting Sunday evening. A skating party and games night is planned for February 2, at the Belgrave arena.
