Brussels Bantams win Tara consolation title Brussels Bantams travelled to Tara tournament this weekend and brought home their first champion ship of the season. After having two dismal perfor mances over Christmas in regular season play the team lept into the lead early in the first game against Acton. Brad Beuermann unleashed a shot fed to him by Mike Bromley at 3:13. A titanic struggle ensued as Acton picked up two in the second period. With six minutes left Wayne Alexander took another feed from Mike Bromley, broke in with checkers climbing all over him to stuff it home. Acton scored on a power play in the closing minutes to send Brussels to the consolation semi-final. Sunday’s game against Milver ton looked like retribution for Brussels’ pre-Christmas loss as Wayne Alexander rolled up a hat- trick with assists from Brian Van Steelandt, Greg Fritz and Ryan Finch. Then with a minute to go in the second period the Brussels’ goalie was ejected from the game. Both teams retired to the dressing room where Mike Bromley donned the goalie’s armor. Milverton came out determined to fire at the net on every available occasion while Brussels attempted to protect their lead. Milverton was stymied by Mike’s unique “back catcher” style but did manage to score twice. Then Mark Robinson and Ryan Finch slammed home a pair of insurance goals with assist from Brian Van Steelandt. Milverton scored once more in the closing seconds but Brussels advanced to the Consolation championship. Brussels maintained their fast- paced, hard-hitting style into the game with Owen Sound. In the first period constant offensive pressure produced one goal by Ryan Finch and Matt Lee and another by Mike Bromley and Brad Beuermann. Owen Sound used their size to advantage in the second period to control the boards in the Brussels’ end and produce two goals for a tie. Brussels’ adjusted their tactics and Mark Robinson slammed home a Tim Coultes pass at 9:51 of the third period. Owen Sound respond ed on a power play minutes later and despite furious end-to-end action the game went into over time. Brussels’ capitalized on the balance of their lines and wore down the overworked stars of the Owen Sound team. Wayne Alexan der shrugged off a couple of checks after taking a Pete Gusso pass and drove to the net to clinch the championship. The team should be commended for an exciting, disciplined perfor mance against excellent opposi tion.
