The Blyth Legion Pee Wees
participated in the Kincardine Sil
ver Stick Tournament over the
holidays where they jelled as a
team on their way to the tourna
ment final.
The team competed in the “C”
Division with the preliminary
games played in a round-robin
format with Zurich, Tiverton and
Normanby Township. Blyth swept
through the round-robin undefeat
ed, outscoring the opposition 18-2,
to finish in first place.
Blyth opened the tournament on
Thursday, December 27 in Tiverton
against arch rival Zurich. Jason
Rutledge, Tim Cowan, Mike Sal-
verda, Brian McNichol and Brad
Anderson, on a power-play scored
for Blyth while the defence -held
Zurich to a single goal. Mike
Salverda, Jason Rutledge and Brad
Anderson picked up two assists
each in the game with single assists
to Brian McNichol and Ryan Cham-
ney as Blyth won 5-1.
This 5-1 win was matched later
on in the afternoon as Blyth
recorded their second win of the
tournament with a 5-1 win over
host Tiverton.
Although Tiverton opened the
scoring in the first period, Blyth
tied the game in the second before
securing the win with four unan
swered third period markers.
Brad Anderson had a big game
as he tied the game in the second,
scored the winner early in the third
and assisted on the insurance goal
50 seconds after scoring the win
ner. Other Blyth marksmen were
Benjie Hakkers, Brian McNichol
and Jonathan Collins, who blasted
a point shot from the blueline to ice
the victory late in the game. Mike
Salverda, Jason Rutledge, Shawn
Hakkers and Greg Toll recorded
single assists while Brad Anderson
picked up his fourth point of the
game as he set up the final Blyth
tally.
Blyth’s final game of the round
robin was played in Ripley on
Saturday, December 29 where they
blasted an over-matched Norman
by Township team 8-0. Goaltenders
Chris Lee and Michael deJong
continued their strong net play as
they added another notch to their
goal sticks with yet another shut
out.
Team play was evident through
out the fine passing and tenacious
forechecking resulting in this lop
sided win. Team captain Brian
McNichol led the way with two
goals, including a shorthanded
effort, and two assists. Shawn
Hakkers recorded two goals, and
an assist while twin brother Benjie
scored one goal and added two
assists. Tim Cowan continued his
fine forward play with two goals
while linemate Ryan Chamney
opened the scoring and assisted on
Blyth’s second goal. Single assists
went to Jonathan Collins, Christo
pher Howson and Henry Bos.
The defensive play of Collins,
Bos, Peter Craig and Greg Toll
stood up well to foil any offensive
outbursts Normanby tried to
develop.
As Blyth finished first in their
division they faced a strong Clinton
A team in the Tournament semi
final later in the day. This game
will be long remembered as one of
the greatest comebacks fashioned
at the Silver Stick Tournament.
Seemingly out of the game with two
minutes left, Blyth caught fire and

Nixon back behind
Hanover Barons bench
The man fans in other Midwes
tern Junior C towns love to hate is
back with the Hanover Barons.
Jim Nixon who coached his team
to a string of league championships
with an abrasive, intimidating style
of hockey, returned to the Hanover
bench in late December after
missing half a season because of
retirement. He returned with a call
for a more aggressive style of
hockey from the team and a hope
that finally his team will get the one
title that has eluded him: the
provincial Jr. C title. Last year.
after nipping a tired Brussels’ Bull
team in the league final, the team
lost in the OHA quarter-finals.
Coach Nixon replaces Doug
Kennedy who was hired as his
replacement after last season when
the team executive opted for a new
direction. Mr. Kennedy resigned
three weeks ago and was succeed
ed on an interim basis by Paul
Lahn. Under Coach Kennedy the
team had trailed Brussels all
season until Brussels slipped into a
slump and Barons defeated Brus
sels to take over top spot by one
point.
