Ripley village pump conservative
BY AB WYLDS
Well, last Friday,
December, . 14, 1979, was
quite a day both here in
Ripley and up in the
nation's capital - Ottawa.
Here in Ripley the. folks
awakened to find their
water taps dry - no water.
The pump had- stopped
pumping about two thirty
in the morning after 31
years in service and
village foreman Donnie
Peterbaugh was having a
busy time. Up in Ottawa
Prime Minister Joe Clark
was also having a busy
time going from place to
place.' The night before
his Conservativeparty
had lost the vote on the
confidence motion on
Finance Minister John
Crosbie's proposed
budget, 133 to .1.39. So
after 93 days as Prime
Minister Joe Clark was
. calling on the Governor
General Ed Schreyer and
then telling parliament it
was overand the election
day will be February 18,
1980..
Since the two things
coincided . last . Friday,
here, it was mentioned
that the village pump
might also be Con-
servative since it also
was not working:. The
saying, that you never
miss the water till . the
well .runs dry, was very
true here.
The cancellation of.
school for the day both at
the public ,,a.p"d high
schools and also for all
events scheduled for .the
Ripley Huron Community
Complex ,.,Centre was
broadcast over the
Wingham station. One
event. which ' was not
cancelled was the noon
Christmas dinner for the
Ripley Senior Citizens
which was held in the
Ripley Huron Legion Hall
and catered by the ladies
of the Legion Auxiliary.
Luckily the . odd person
had some water sitting
around from Thursday.
Some like Carl Brennan
at his store used ice cubes
from .the refrigerator to.
melt for water to make
morning coffee. Others
went to nearby farms like
Allan. Colling's place just
east of Ripley for cans of
water.
Donnie Peterbaugh.
discovered that there was
.no water in the taps at his
own house around three
in the morning, Clarence
Pollock was called and
together it was
discovered that the main
drive shaft in the well
was broken. The Pollock
Electric firm including
Rod _MacDonald., Bill
Elliott, Tony Howald,
Brian Regier, and Ian
MacKay a and Clarence
Pollock himself .worked
ondismantling the old
pump and installation of
the new one. `Thanks to
the village council a new
pump and pipes were
held here in storage for
the time when just such a
break would occur.
A firm in Owen Sound
with a lifting crane was
contacted during the
morning and agreed to
come. On their way here
they had to wait for some
time in Hanover due to
poor visibility caused by
the snow and also poor
road conditions. They
arrived around three
thirty in the afternoon.
When they started to haul
up the piping It was found
that itcould not be un-
couped due to years of
rusting and corrosion.
Ron Nicholson, who
operates the. Ripley Steel
and Machine Shop, the
former Howard Hodge
Garage, brought down his
cutting torch and cut the
old pipe off about every
twenty feet. In this way,
it was removed. Then the
new pipes, -shaft and new
pump were. installed.
During the day Donnie
Peterbaugh. was. going
and coming from
Lucknow hauling water
with the tank truck - 15
loads in all, each 1200
gallons - never rnind this
metric litres, then
George Whitby. of
Lucknow using the
Lucknow truck brought
over another load.
In this way the people
of Ripley had water for
short periods during the
afternoon. The water.
being hauled in the trucks
could possibly : contain
bacteria so it was heavily
disinfected by adding
liquid chlorine. When
water was tapped, it sure
smelled strong - the smell
of Javex or iodine. In a
white pail it was slightly
yellowish and . some
people found it hard on
their throats. Boiling it
for some minutes helped
drive the chlorine out.
So now, thanks to all
these workmen, the
Ripley water system is
again working. The
people of Ripley will
remember the work they
did. Thanks goes to the
village of Lucknow, and
to those men from Owen
Sound who braved the
snowy wintry roads to
come here to help, and to
all in the Ripley council
for their foresight, to Ron
Nicholson and village
foreman Donnie
Peterbaugh.
WINS AT ROYAL
Huron township reeve
Mike Snobelen received
some good new's in the
mail. Last Friday Mike
called to say that he had
just received word on his
flax exhibits shown at the
Royal Winter Fair in
November: For his entry
of Linnot. flax 'seed he
received first prize a red
ribbon and twenty five
dollars.
A Canada Department
of Agriculture man told
Mike that this was the
first -time an Ontario
entry had placed first.
Checking the Royal prize
list . bears this out - in
previous years the -first
prize winners were from
Manitoba, Saskat-
chewan, or Alberta
For his entry of Duf-
ferin variety of flax ..he
placed second - and a blue
ribbon with twenty
dollars. Also his Linnot
seed was second in the
Grand Championship
Class and for this his wife
Judy says that they
received a coloured
rosette. This is the first
time Mike has shown at
the Royal to our
knowledge. The seed was
cleaned at the former
Anderson Mill in
Lucknow where Sandy
and Greg Liddle, sons of
Doug and Irene Liddle of
Ripley are in charge and
Tom Broome does .the
trucking. Mikehimself
did not get down to the
Coliseum in Toronto as he
was busy with drying
corn at his drying plant
on the 4th concession.
west in Huron township.
He - says that he grew
the flax on one of his
farms down the road - the
former J.S. Robb place.
Come . to think about it,
the Linnot flax entry of
Courtney MacDonald
took first in a dozen en-
tries at the Ripley fall
fair. So congratulations
to Mike, Sandy, and Greg
on their achievement. No
doubt their machine
cleaning beats cleaning
by hand in the backyard
using the wind.
