hazard presented by the location of the new
unit on the second floor, at a location
furthest from a fire exit, is an "extremely
foolish risk" to take with children. As well,
the entire crib room is non-ambulatory.
• The possibilities of eross-infection are
dangerous, says the Institute in its letter.
One pediatric nurse is now acting with the
assistance of other general and surgery
nurses which presents a "ludicrous" health
hazard. Previously, the children's ward had
its own nursing staff.
The possibility also exists for exposure of
new:born infants to childhood diseases and
infections because the obstetrics ward is on
the second floor and the mothers share a
lounge with the children on the floor. The
lounge is the only play area for the children
other than the nursing station and hallways.
The former ward was a self-contained unit
where the children were well away from
other patients. Other hospital patients are in
the same area as the new location and they
are under considerable stress listening to
youngsters • cry through the night.
The Institute criticizes the hospital for
limiting space for children in the hospital to
two rooms. This does not allow for. isolation.
' A child recovering from the general
anesthetic ef a tonsillectomy could well find
him or herself in a room with several
ambulator and vociferous toddlers.
The letter also' stresses that play is vitally
important to a child's adjustinent to hospital-
ization and recOvery, The new location has
no playroom and the existing play therapy
program and existing equipment cannot be
used. The Institute states in its letter that
they are "intensely angry to see the
emotions and recovery psychology of a child
so blantantly abused".
Hospitalization is an extremely frighten-
ing experience for some children, according
to the institute.tetteCThe previOus ward was
cheerful, colourful, sunny ,and airy. It was a
ward of which the community could be
preue. The new location however, is dark,
• barren and intimidating, and ads the letter,
"a sorry price to pay for the saving of a few

pence".
In conclusion the letter says that decisions
of this import affect , the entire aFea of
surrounding town, villages and townships.
The Institute criticizes the hospital for failing
to make, such a decision fully public in local
newspapers, The Institute feels the matter
should have been considered by the Board of
Directors of the hospital before the move
was implemented. Executive Director Norm-
an Hayes maintains it, is an administrative
•decision and does not require Board.
approval.
