variables affect
park price

What is the pork stabiliza-
tion price that will exist for
the period April 1, 1979 to
March 31, 1980? It isn't
possible to 'give a black and
white answer. There are
many variables that can
affect the final price. How-
ever, it is possible to work
through, an example to obtain
an approximate. figure„
First, we have to take the
average weighted pork prices
which occurred during the
past five years. If we average
the 1973-74 to 1977-78 prices
(100 index Carcass) of
549.72; $70.02; $58.92;
$63:60 and $70:55, we obtain
an average price of $62.56
per cwt. The Federal Gov-
ernment supports pork at
90% of this figure with
adjustments for changes, in
cost of production. 90% of
$62.56 amounts to $56.30..1''.
1978-79, cash costs of prod-
uction were 59c more than
average costs, for the previ-
ous five years. If we :assume
a similar increase in 1979-80,
then .our price, increases to
$56.89.
Next April .a weighted
price will be calculated for
the. previous,°twelve .months.
It ' will be computed from
figures in the Canadian Live-
stock. & Meat Trade Report,
which is published .weekly.
Individual figures will be
obtained for the different
regions in •Canada - West,
Ontario, . Quebec and the
Matimes. These •. figures

will be comprised of weekly
figures . 'weighted for num-
bers marketed. The individ-
ual figures will then be
weighted for regional mark-
etings and used to obtaina
national price. The stabilized
price will be compared to the
national weighted 'price for
the twelve month period. The
difference will represent any
stabilization payment. •
It's vital to remember that
the average monthly weight-
ed price covers the high and
• low . prices . for . the twelve
month period beginning Ap-
ril 1, 1979. A quick review of
the Livestock & Meat. Trade
Report shows the following
monthly average prices at
Toronto;_April - 564.88; May
- $63.90; June'; 67.70; July -
$61.26; August - $61.50;
September $61.9.5 and
October - $57.1.3. These
prices are above the stabliz-
ed price and will likely offset
low prices in .the last five
months.
How - many hogs would
qualify? The last, payment
was made in 1973. At that
timea producer could collect
on a maximum of 1,500
animals. However, apparent-
ly the, government has the
option of changing the, maxi-
' mum number whenever a
stabilization payment is
made.
These figures are used to
demonstrate .how•the plan
works. We. believe they are
\in the "ball park" for .'
1979-80. However, the Fed-
eral Government .calculates I
the final figures and, there is
risk . in attempting to antici-
pate their calculations.
