Keep child
in home
BY DOROTHY SIMPSON
CHILDRENS AID SOCIETY
It is not always in the best
interest of the child to be.
removed from . his home.
Care for this child should
begin in the homewith the
whole family. The Childrens."
Aid hasa program '.helping
make the childs home safe,
while he remains in it.
When there is 'reason to
believe a child is in need of
protection the first condiserg
ation for the child is to make
sure removing him from his
home will not be' harmful. : If
the child' remains at hotne
supervision must be carried
out.
A childrens aid worker
visits the home"' frequently
watching that basic needs of •
the child are being met; he is
kept clean and family prob-
lems that can harm him are
being. solved. Each visit can
be a step closer for the safety
of the child if everyone in the
.family, is willing to reunite.
Every child can be given a
chance to have their prob-
lems sorted out at home if
There is nodanger to the
child. This is one of the most
important aspects of the
childrens aid. work. A child
can be more threatened by
being moved from home than
any form of mistreatment
they may have received. In
any case the child is the one,
that has to understand the
situation and be protected
from Harm.

As a result the hospital
willcall in. a ;consultant.
from the provincial
health ministry to decide
whether the present
location is acceptable.
Mary Vair, president of
the hospital auxiliary,
objected to the .move,
saying that she had been
approached by up to 60
mothers and hospital
workers who are upset
about the. situation. She
noted that the noise of a
sick child crying all night
can be upsetting to other
patients and pointed out
that, while other patients
have facilities available
for relaxation and
therapy, there • 'is no
longer any play area for
the children,
Another board member
asked why the board had
not been consulted about
the move.
Hospital director
Norman Hayes said that
the board wasn't told
about.the move because it`
was an operational
decision. He did offer to
call in the senior nursing
consultant from .. the
health ministry to review
the situation..
Mr. Hayes noted that
the nursing staff had been
