Sentinel, Wednestloy, November 21, 1979,-449e 13 Wins Bruce institute scholarshi_p At commencement exer- cises. at Kincardine District High School recently, Leanne Farrell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Farrell, R. R,, # 1 Kincardine; was present- ed with this year's Bruce County. 'Women's Institute Scholarship, by Mrs. Flor'. ence Kirkpatrick of Ripley. The scholarship is presen- ted annually to a 4-H Home- making Club member who, has completed at least six 4-H Homemaking Club pro- jects and is continuing his/ •her education beyond high • school. Selection is based on the applicants' personal qualities, advancement in • 4-H, scholastic ability, Prin- cipal's comments and an essay which each applicant is' required to write. The coin- . mittee had a difficult jOb to chose one from the six appli- cants this year. Leanne has completed twelve 4-H Homemaking Club projects and was assist-. ant leader for her local club last summer. She is active in the ' Ripley Junior •Farmers and has been a,:eandy-Strip, er at Kincardine Hospital for two years. Her hobbies include -sew-.. ing, macrame."'needlepoint, LEANNE FARRELL gardening, piano (Grade 8), reading, drying flowers, swimming, tennis, cross country skiing, quilting and calligraphy. This past spring Leanne graduated with honours and is attending life UniversitY of Western Ontario, enrolled in Occupational Therapy in the • Faculty •of Medicine. The applicants of the: scholarship wererequired to write an essay on the topic "The Greatest Benefit 4-1-1 !las :For Me".. Leanne's • essay follows: THE GREATEST BENEFIT 4-H HAS FOR ME BY LEANNE FARRELL Involvement in interesting and challenging 4-H Home- niaking clubs provides an oppottunity for the young adult to equip herself with' the knowledge, values and skills that: will become a positive influence in her life. • The personal development of the member is long lasting as she learns to have confidence in herself and her abilities. The greatest benefit 4.-H has had for .rne‘involves the development of confidence in myself and my abilities. The 441 motto "Learn To, Do By Doing" requires the member to draw on her abilities, to test them out and therefore to improve these abilities. Every member experiences a sense. Of pride when she realiies that she really can do it by • herself; and pride in •one's own accomplishments is an 'diserittal step towards developing self-assurance. When 1 began • 4 -Ft at the age of a'elve, 1 didn't realize how valuable the experiences 1 was about to have would be.. In the twelve clubs .1 have • taken 1 have learned* how to sew, embroider; design, dec- orate, preserve foods, cook and even how to build a fire! These elemental skills will undoubtedly be of value in the future, no matter what my position in life. Many may think these skills could be learned elsewhere, but nowhere else could , the young adult gain as many hidden benefits. 4-H is very unique because it teaches one to be responsible, to communicate, and to get along with all people; quali- ties which encourage the youth to become a useful citizen. The 4-H member learns to be responsible by ,accepting responsibility, and she learns always to do her best, Through involvement in 4-H the member is encour- aged to understand, apprec- iate and accomplish goals which make life better for everyone. It is a learning experience, one that provid- q's life-long benefits, and I attribute the development of confidence in myself and my abilities to may experiences 411 in 4-H. I think this is the greatest benefit 4-H had had for me. Trinity • Viiits mother m hospital BY BELL HACKETT Mrs. Joan Livingston and Mrs. Bernice Kemp visited on Sunday with .
