!las :For Me".. Leanne's
• essay follows:
THE GREATEST BENEFIT
4-H HAS FOR ME
BY LEANNE FARRELL
Involvement in interesting
and challenging 4-H Home-
niaking clubs provides an
oppottunity for the young
adult to equip herself with'
the knowledge, values and
skills that: will become a
positive influence in her life.
•
The personal development of
the member is long lasting as
she learns to have confidence
in herself and her abilities.
The greatest benefit 4.-H
has had for .rne‘involves the
development of confidence in
myself and my abilities. The
441 motto "Learn To, Do By
Doing" requires the member
to draw on her abilities, to
test them out and therefore
to improve these abilities.
Every member experiences a
sense. Of pride when she
realiies that she really can do
it by • herself; and pride in
•one's own accomplishments
is an 'diserittal step towards
developing self-assurance.
When 1 began • 4 -Ft at the
age of a'elve, 1 didn't realize
how valuable the experiences
1 was about to have would be..
In the twelve clubs .1 have
• taken 1 have learned* how to
sew, embroider; design, dec-
orate, preserve foods, cook
and even how to build a fire!
These elemental skills will
undoubtedly be of value in
the future, no matter what
my position in life. Many
may think these skills could
be learned elsewhere, but
nowhere else could , the
young adult gain as many
hidden benefits. 4-H is very
unique because it teaches
one to be responsible, to
communicate, and to get
along with all people; quali-
ties which encourage the
youth to become a useful
citizen. The 4-H member
learns to be responsible by
,accepting responsibility, and
she learns always to do her
best,
Through involvement in
4-H the member is encour-
aged to understand, apprec-
iate and accomplish goals
which make life better for
everyone. It is a learning
experience,one that provid-
q's life-long benefits, and I
attribute the development of
confidence in myself and my
abilities to may experiences
411 in 4-H. I think this is the
greatest benefit 4-H had had
for me.
