and drama activity head at the camp, Mary
Lynn and her fellow department headswere
instructed in working with the handicapped
child during a week's training. - •
They learned how to lift the children,
viewed fUms about handicapped children
. . and ,prepared their workareas.
llesides the drama and .music program,
camp. activities .include arts and crafts,
camperaft and nature, outdoor sports and
swimming. .
With only two weeks to prepare each of
the productions, the job was very demanding
• but Mary Lynn enjoyed every minute. •
The primary group inc uded 49 children
but the remaining thre groups had 64
children in each.
Mary Lynn used panto ime, acting out,
singing and reading to determine 'which
child would play a part in the play and the
children read for their parts:
She had 40 minutes each day and .the
entire day of the production's presentation
for rehearsals. Although it was a .limited
amount of time to get up a play within a two
week period, Mary Lynn found the children
very enthusiastic. Whenever she went into
their cabins during a free period or rest time,
they would bereading their parts, to each:
other to Yearn their lines.
Acting in a play at camp is an opportunity
these children may not have in school, she
_ points out. One child who is .particularly.
interested . in drama and is: active in • his
school's drama program, has never been
chosen for a lead role. Camp gave him' a
chance to star in a production.
As well as a learning experience; acting is
fun says Mary Lynn. The children really
enjoyed working on the plays and presenting.
them.
Mary Lynn strived for perfection, but
remembers the little things that happened as
being the most rewarding. The dwarf, Dopey
is a mute in the play,' Snow White. Camp
Woodeden's Dopey, however,spoke more
through the play than any of the other
characters.
The acting also gives the children confid-
ence says Mary Lynn. They' have a great
sense of achivement when the final curtain
drops on their performance.
Mary Lynn finds these children have a
better sense of humour than 'non -handi-
capped children. They are ready to laugh at
themselves and are not as quick to put down.
another person, because they have. been put
down . themselves.
Mary Lynn hopes to go back next summer.
She feels more qualified as a drama coach
since her experience this past summer.
While she wondered if she could teach
drama to children because she had little
--experience in the field herself, she has
learned to have more confidence in herself
as well.. She and the children learned.
together as they went along and accomplish
ed great things.
