the day, when they would not have to care

The •project grew and developed into the
Golden Circle School which operates from
the Winghign ,PUblieSchool, the ilver Circle
Nursery and Day Care and the hek Reavie
Opportunity Workshop. ,
• The three facilities provide services for the
retarded from infancy to adulthood.
"It is amazing what these children can
achieve under the direction of teachers who
love them," says Harvey. "It is almost
impossible to realize."
Much of Harvey's service work has been
child oriented. The Masonic Lodge program,
Project H.E.L.P., is the principal, support for
initiating a viable program of research
through •the Ontario Deafness Research
Foundation, to assist deaf children.
He has also driven school bus for over 30
years, without an accident; •which is an
impressive accomplishment: -
Harvey also served in local politics. sitting
on the Lucknow Village Council for nine
years.
Lawn bowling has been a recreational
activity Harvey enjoys., He actively- particip-
ated in this organization as president in
1957. This club played the British Empire
Bowlers in Hanover: He later served as
president of the Western Ontario Lawn
Bowlers.
With his active community involvement
and service work, it is surprising Harvey
found time to participate in a recreational
activity such as bowlingmuch less serve in
bffices. of the club at both the local and
western Ontario levels.
His wife,. Edith can remember when he
worked as Cabinet Secretary 2 to the District
for, the, Lions, they had stationery piled on
the floor in .three foot stacks. Edith did the
typing for the correspondence and is certain
Harvey tkbuld have had to hire a secretary to
keep up with the work of the poSition, if she
had not been able to help. :
SPOON COLLECTION
Not disinterested in community affairs
herself, Edith has been actively involved • in
church and women's groups 'and serves as a •
tester for BroWnies. She is also a member of
the Lucknow District, Horticultural Society
and prepared a display marking the Interna-
tional :Year of the Child for this spring's
Horticultural Tea.
• She has belonged to the. Eastern Star
Lodge for over 30 years and sang in the
Church choir for about the same length of
time. She has an extensive collection of
coffee spoons numbering 540, including two
spoons from Lucknow, India, .engraved with
• Lucknow, Ontario.
The walls of her home are .alive with the
colours of needlevvork pictures she has done
• and the windows of her back porch are
grown over with Plants.
Harvey And. Edith are both interested in
fantily history. Edith has several scrapbooks
of clippings to trace Webster family hap-
' penings through the years. Harvey was
president of the Webster family picnic when
it celebrated its 50th reunion,
• A Webster Family History Book has been
"compiled and Edith has, written a biography
of herself and Harvey which she keep's. in the
family history. A writer since very yeung,
her stories and poems have been published
i several publications. •
Her own interest stems from the fact that
she never knew her grandparents. Her great
grandparents had emigrated to Canada and
following their deaths, Edith's grandmother
lived with her stepmother until she was
• fourteen when she left home.
There was no large extended family in
• Canada for Edith to know while she grew up
and she always missed having aunts and
• uncles and grandmothers and great
grandfathers. •
When she married into the • Webster
• family, it was overwhelming to her because
• there were so many of them and fascinating
• to see how they had become inter -related
• through marriage with other members of the
local community.
•t LOCAL HISTORIAN
• Harvey could be attributed to as the, local
• family historian. When people come to,
Lucknow to trace their family roots, they
invariably seek documents at the ' clerk's
• office ,and village clerk, Alf Herbert, just as
invariably sends them to Harvey. There have
been very few over the years that •HarVey
• was unable to help in finding where their
families had once lived in this area.
Harvey is especially proud of a trunk
brought to Canada from Tipperary; Ireland
in 1.837 by his great grandparents, Daniel
• and Susan Webster who settled at Norval
near Toronto and later took up 500 acres of
• land in ..Ashfield Township at $1.50 per acre

for their five sons.
Edith finds it incredible that the young
couple set out for Canada with all their
worldly possessions in the little trunk.
"Can you imagine going offto Canada as
a new •bride with everything in this one
trunk?" she asks. Brides usually have linen,
china and furniture, and so many things they
want to take along for a new home.
Harvey has a family picture which shows
his Webster grandparents with their child-
ren and grandchildren gathered for their
50th wedding anniversary. He has a
collectionof old, family photographs which
add to his copy of ,the Webster family
history. Both Harvey and Edith want their
grandchildren and great grandchildren to
have access to family history.

Edith feels it is a shame that a child who is
•interested in knowing about a grandparent
they never knew, cannot learn about the
person. In the histories, Edith has included
special things she and Harvey remember
from their childhood and characteristics
which fill out their personalities, so the
reader can learn about Edith and Harvey
even though they never knew them.
The years of community service have been
rewarding says Harvey. He would not have
become involved for any personal recog-
nition, but said he could not • have contri-
• buted as he has unless he had found it
worthwhile and satisfying,
As Edith observes, "You give a lot of
yourself, but if you do, you get back." The
reward is in the giving.
