Clarence Lange presented Agricultural Service diplomas to Mrs. Mar- jorie Thompson, the retired secretaries and to Stewart Needham. Stewart gave a talk which held the attention of the crowd on the b bleacher seats as he told how the Needham family had been connected with this fair from its beginning in 1863 at Amberley down to the present 1979. Over the mike his voice carried out clearily over the grounds. Also he paid tribute to the work of the secretaries and for this Fran and Ab wish to thank Stewart. Gordon Patterson presented' the Ab and Fran Wylds trophy donated by .the Ripley Agricultural: Society to its. first winner, Grant MacDonald, concession 2, Huron Township. for the highest total points in the standing field crop competitions combined with the grain show in the Ripley Huron Complex. President Mrs. Janet Citizenship discussed by Ripley WT ' BY MRS. MARGARET GEMMELL Morning coffee was served at Margaret Gemmeli's home when the Ripley Women's Institute rnet in October. Mrs. Hedley and Mrs. Mary MacDonald served the lunch following the coffee. The:. president Mrs. • Walter Lock took the chair and Miss Christine Robertson was. secretary. Mrs. Frances Gemmell, Mrs. James Kirkpatrick, Ms. Frank Scott, and. Mrs. The Stt presented a report on the Grey Bruce Area Convention. held. in Meaford in September. The roll call was "name a new member of the Federal Cabinet". Mrs. Frank Fair gave an excellent talk on citizenship on "what makes the nation great". Mrs. Murray Culbert talked on the year of the child stating that the child has many rights including affection, free education, ecreation, agnd many others. Children have the right to belong as a person and citizen. Show a good example to your children and discipline them but also give praise when it is coming to them. Mrs. Fair thanked Mrs. Culbert and presented her with a gift. Mrs. Gemmell pla<yyed an organ solo. Farrell spoke on behalf of the lady directors and all who assisted them. Alan then called on the present president Dan A. MacDonald who in- troduced Mrs. Pat MacLean to declare the fiar open. As mentioned above thanks to Stewart Needham for his ,won-, derful talk and kind remarks on our behalf. Also thanks goes to Alan MacLean for his fine job as Master of Ceremonies and for his help from his notes in making it passible to write the above account of the 1979 opening ceremonies. Our thanks to all the members of the Ripley Agricultural Society now and in the past for their great help in carrying out all those fairs and for the trophy, plaque, and diploma. On the platform for the opening ceremonies for the Ripley Fall Fair on Saturday, Sept. 29 were Master of Ceremonies Alari McLean, , Reeves Mike Snobelen for Huron Township and Bill Tranter for Ripley Village, Miss Mid - Western Ontario, Vicki Bryce of Paisley, MPP Murray Gaunt of Wingham, MP Robert McKinley, Bruce and Grey District 10, Agricultural Society Director, Clarence Lange of Chesley, past president of Ripley Agricultural Society, Jack Farrell, former District 10 director and head of the. Grain Committee, Gordon Patterson, past president Stewart Needham, past president lady director, Mrs. Marjorie Thompson, lady president,' Mrs. Janet Farrell, president of the Rip -ley Agricultural Society, Dan A. MacDonald and District 10 director, Mrs. Patricia MacLean of Thornbury who declared the fair gfficially open'. The folks coming the farthest distance to the Ripley fall fair last Saturday were Dr. Donald W. MacDonald of Edmonton, who returned home on Monday after visiting his brother Doug and wife Eileen. Then from, the East it was Petty Officer and Mrs. David Courtney of Halifax. David is with the Canadian Navy." Al Thanksgiving in Ripley by Ab Wylds Miss Jean MacDonald of the Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home in ,Lucknow spent the Thanksgiving . weekend with her sister Noreen at their home on Malcolm Street in Ripley. Visiting with Miss Florence, MacDonald in Ripley for the Thanksgiving weekend were George and Jeannie.. Marie MacLennan,. Virginia and Colin of Agincourt. The Ripley . Senior Citizens Club is meeting in the Ripley Legion Hall on Friday for an "over 80" birthday party.' Mr. and Mrs. Archie Parker of Guelph, Mr. Jack Webster of Edmonton, Orland Richards of Lucknow, Isobel and Walter Forster were dinner guests with Gladys Mason. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ferguson and Allen, .Mr. and Mrs. Earl Elliott and Ian; Dick McCosh, Mr. and Mrs. `John . Farrell and girls Teresa and Tania were dinner guests with Mr. and Mrs. Don McCosh. Visiting with. Mrs. Mary (Donnie) MacDonald were Dr.. and Mrs. Sandy MacDonald and, Curtis, Farquhar MacDonald and family from Brampton. Lois Wardell., Mike Kelly and • Christopher Wardell visited with Mr. and Mrs. Les Wardell and later all visited with Mr. and Mrs. Glen Wardell of Tiverton. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Murray of Ripley celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last Sunday. Among those there were his sister Marie and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Arlson Knox of Wheatley. Dave and Grace had a family gathering and dinner at the Bruce Inn in Kin- cardine on Sunday. Friends and neighbours join in congratulations to Dave and Grace on this happy occasion. Bill and Anhetta Robinson, Darryl and Lisa spent last Saturday in London. On Sunday for Thanksgiving dinner with Chester and Irene Emmerton were Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Emmerton, Dianne, Shannon and, Robbie of Woodstock; Mr. and M.rs.: Jim Emmerton and daughter Tasha of London; Mr. and Mrs. Jack . Findlay and son Daryl. of Guelph; Mrs. Betty Powers of Oakville and Mrs. Eileen Nesbitt of Huronvilia in Ripfey. A change, of ownership in business on, Ripley's main street has Klaus Heinisch of London taking over Frank's Garage. Frank Zipfe;l has operated the garage for the past 22 years. Frank and Rita Zipfel will continue to live in Ripley. Klaus and Dianne Heinsch have purchased a home in Ripley ac, - cording to reports.' Mrs: Heinisch is the daughter of Dirinie MacDonald and sister of Jack MacDonald. Dianne grew up here and. at- tended Ripley schools before becoming a' nurse in London. Mrs. Katherine Coiling of Ripley was a dinner guest on.Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Coiling, their family and friends. On Friday and Saturday a week ago Mrs. Anne Huber of Ripley accompanied her daughter Patti Juber of Kincardine. There they visited with her son and wife Mr. and Mrs. Doug Huber and her daughter Carol and husband Mr. and Mrs. Doug San- dercott, Fall fair week was a busy one at the' home of John and Karen Wyld on Malcolm Street as his parents, Tena and Harold Wylds ' of Weston visited with them and also helped install a deck and cement work at .the house. Karen's, parents, brother and grandmother Ken and Bernice Gale and Alan of Weston and Vi Gale L -of Cambridge were here on the weekend. All attended the fair meeting with friends and relatives. Back from University Hospital in London is Lloyd Lamont of the sixth concession west in Huron Township. Lloyd recently underwent shoulder surgery there and has his arm in ,a sling. It is nice to see these folks back homelagain. • Some of those we missed in last week's list of those attending the Ripley Fair were Mrs. Mae Cotton and her daughter Mrs. Shirley (Reg) McGrath of Hagersville, Bill Pat- terson of Kincardine and his brother Ernie Pat- terson, Mrs. Evan Smyth of RR1 Formosa, who is the treasurer of the Teeswater Fair. She is the former Irene Mahood of the 4th concession of Huron Township, and in the late forties while at- tending the Ripley Continuation School, she was a star track athlete. For Mrs. Wilson Knox of Wheatley who was here for the 40th anniversary of her brother- Dave Murray and wife Grace, the fair was of special interest.
