a
Brookside student's poem
on Rem,embrance album
BY SHARON DIETZ
It isn't often poets have their
musings recorded on a record. This is
usually reserved for, the "IiKet of
Leonard Cohen. But a young Colborne •
teenager will have her poem, telling
why she wears a poppy on Rernem-
brance Day, recorded on an upcoming
album being produced by the Goderich
Royal Canadian Legion.
Donna Freeman of Colborne
Township wrote the poem as an
English assignment when she was a
grade eight student at Brookside
Public School last year. Donna's poem,
° Why I Wear a Poppy, won the Lucknow
Legion's Remembrance Day Poetry
Contest last year.
She recalls she did not think her
poem would even be selected to enter
the contest, much less win the contest.
Teresa Harding of Goderich decided
Donna's poem would be a suitable
addition to an album she is planning to
record.
The album entitled, •Precious •Men,
from the titlesong written by Theresa,
will feature Donna's poem, choir music
by the Goderich Harbouraires, Made
up of Legion members and directed by
Lorne Dotterer. The album will also
include clips of Hitler's final speech,
borrowed from the CBC library and
conversations in a bomber asit was
going down. •
Theresa wrote the song, Precious
Men, after her father died in Sun-
nybrook; London, four years ago. He.
had been in hospital about one and a
half years :before his death and the
impact of the men who live there has
never faded. ThereSa recalls men who
will live the rest of their lives in vats of
jelly. They have lived there since the
war. She remembers their eyes.
"Their spirit is dead. They seem to
say, let me die," she says.
When Theresa saw Donna's poem she

come together and she approached, the
Goderich Legion fOr financial backing
to produce an, album that would be a
mixture of musit and documentary
commemorating all those who fought
in the world wars. The .concept has
never been tried in the history of
Canada by the Legion.
After months of consideration, the
Goderich Legion decided to Sponsor the
project and set up a committee to work
on an advisory basis and help promote
the album.
Theresa's ten -year-old couSin, who
has won a southern Ontario public.
speaking award, will read Donna's
poem on the album.
Don Henry of Goderich, formerly of
LuCknovv, isdesigning the album cover
and will do the graphic set up for it.
• Theresa is ,manager of the album,
responsible for the. •production,
marketing and promotion. Slated for
release May 8', the album will be
recorded in the Mercey Bros. Recor-
ding Studio in Elmira some time in
February. The projected market for
the alburn has blossomed to a Canada-.
wide and pbssible U.S. copywright
marketing deal. There are 375,000
Royal Canadian Legion members who
are the main market, but really the
potential customer is anyone.
Theresa's idea for the album sterns
from the impact of what she saw when
she visited her father at Sunnybrook
Hospital and her own feelings about the
• apathy towards Remembrance Day.
"Students don't even krioW'Why.they
get a day off school on Remembrance
Day," she retrial -kis.
It' makes her angry when people
don't care„ that Men died in two world
wars, She is determined to 'make
people feel the impact of what she saw
at SunnybrOok Hospital, and Theresa is
determined that the album, Precious
'Men, will do just that. •
