Fall Fair coming to Ripley......
+from page 18
the Western Fair,
London.
Dick and Jean
Edmiston of Ripley in the
past couple of weeks
attended the , Canadian
National Exhibition in
Toronto and also the
Western Fair out Dundas
Street east in London.
Both these fairs feature
grandstand shows as well
as many other at-
tractions.
Last Fri., Sept. 14, Mrs.
Elizabeth MacDonald of
Ripley celebrated her
91st birthday at her home
in the west end of the
village. , Friends and
neighbours called to wish
Aunt Lizzie, as she is
affectionately known in
this area, many happy
returns at this special
time. Mrs. MacDonald is
a native of the 6th con-
cession west in Huron
township- just a couple of
farms .east of S.S.
number 5 public school.
Before retiring to Ripley
she and her late husband
operated the farm on
Highway, 21 just north of.
Reid's Corners. On Sun.,
Sept. 9. a special birthday
party was held at the
home of her grand-
daughter Mary Elizabeth
(Walden) now Mrs. Ray
Chowan in London.
Attending.from here were
her second grand-
daughter Gertrude Lee
(Walden) now Mrs. John
Larson who lives on the
McCormick farm on the
Shore Road up the hill at
Poplar Beach, 10th
concession of Huron
township, grandson
Brock Wladen west of
Reid's Corners on the 4th
concession and niece
Jean MacDonald of
Ripley and Lucknow who
had the weekend off at
Pinecrest Manor Nursing
Home. Everyone in this
area joins with these
relatives in wishing Aunt
Lizzie a Happy Birthday
with more to come.
Mrs. Mary King of
Flarriston, Mrs. Archie
Miller of Gorrie, and Mrs.
Jean MacDonald were
visitors last week at the.
home of Mrs. Frances
Elliott in Ripley.
Last Saturday evening
at a quarter past eight the
Ripley fire sirensounded
loud and clear on the nice
evening air calling all
available firemen to the
fire hall. In a few minutes
the redfire engine and
the pumper truck with
signal lights flashing
were headed north on the
15th road out of Ripley.
Watching to see if they
turned off at the tenth
corner one could see a
long line of red tail lights
as the line of cars headed
out past the farm of Wally
and Elaine Pollock. They
turned west on the 12th
concession, the second
corner north of Ripley:
They went right across
Highway 21 and on down
the hill at the foot of the
12th to turn south on the
Boiler Beach road a short
distance then up the hill
again into the Kin Bruce
Subdivision. This area is
located between the 12th
and 10th concessions of
Huron township. The fire
was at the home of Paul
Machan who was away at
the time. Neighbours had
turned in the fire call.
The firemen located the
fire' in the basement
recreation. Here wooden
studs were burning inside.
the wall ` over the fire
place. Firemen had to
chop a hole in the wall to
get at the fire. Once this
was done they were able
to get it out. Firemen
answering the' fire
whistle in Ripley were
Doug Liddle, Ray Fuller,
John D. MacKay, Joe
Hodgins, Harvey. Pollock,

Johnny Dodds, Donnie
Peterbaugh, Bob
Johnston, Allan Irwin,
Roddy MacDonald . and'
George McLean. They
were out about two hours
and were glad to be able
to save the home and that
the neighbours called in
time for them to do this.
Our thanks to John Dodds
and Doug Liddle for the
information. This was the
second fire call' in the
past six days for , the
Ripley firemen who had a
fire practice between the
calls. At noon on Monday
of this week the fire
whistle was again
sounded and the fire
truck headed north so
make it three calls in
seven days.

Hazel MacDonald was
hostess for the WMS of
Knox Presbyterian
Church on . Tuesday af-1.
ternoon with 17 members
answering the roll call by
telling how God blesses
us. After the .. "Call to
Worship" by Adeline
Hackett who was filling in
for the president, the.
minutes of the last.
meeting were read by
Gladys Huston.
The reports were given
by the different
"secretaries and the
treasurer. Donalda
Gossel reported having
sent a "Birthday Card"
to Mrs. Gillies and
Martha Maclvor and also
had each, member sign a
"Get Well"' card for
Frances Nugent who is
convalescing in London
following surgery. Hazel
MacDonald reminded the
group the "Glad Tidings"
-subscriptions of two
dollars are due in Sep-
tember.
The, scripture from
Exodus was read by'
Minerva Stewart,
followed. with prayer by
Donalda Gossel. The
topic was well given by
Effie Sutherland. She
spoke of how God used
Moses to lead the
children. of Israel from
Egypt to the "Promised
Land." Moses felt he was
not free enough of speech
to talk with Pharoah and
also felt that the children
of Israel woud not believe
him when he would tell
them he :,was being led by
God. So the Lord said to
hien, "Cast thy rod" upon
the ground and when he
did it became a serpent
and he fled from it. Then
the Lord said, "Put forth
thy hand and take it by
the tailand it became a
rod again.. Furthermore
the Lord said, "Put thy
hand into thy bosom, and
behold when he took it out
it was leprous as snow."
And the Lord told him to
put it back in his bosom
again and when he took it
out it , was as his other
flesh. And the Lord said if
they will„_ „_riot _ believe
either of hese miracles,
that Moses Was to take
somewater from the
river and pour rt on the
dry land: and behold this
water, will turn to blood.
But Moses still dwelt on
his slowness of speech,
and the Lord said, "Go
and I will be with thy
mouth and teach you
what to say. So Aaron,
Moses' brother, who was
a good speaker went with
Moses and the Lord was
with them. So many of us
feel we have no talents
but everyone of God's
children has some ;talent
and we must use each one
as we are given a chance.
She also conducted a very
interesting "Quiz” on the
"Book of Exodus," which
we were to have read
during the summer.
A reading by Gladys
Huston "Go Ahead And
Hate Me," about a young
lad called "Kwan" from
Hong Kong attending
school in "Kearney State
College" in' Nebraska,
and in one of his essays he
wrote "There are three
kinds of teachers - those
who are interestingbut
stupid; those who are
intelligent but boringand
those who are both boring
and stupid - like my
English teacher" and yet
after all that, the teacher
talked with. him and When
he wiped his eyes and
handed heris hanker -
'chief she said, "at that
moment for the first time
she slaw Kwan did look
Christlike." In I .'his
apology' note to the
teacher he wrote as
follows: "I am truly
sorry for what I have
written. I meant the
essay as a big teasing
joke. Instead I. have jtist
hurt you, the only true
friend I have'. I've been
rejected sooften "in my
life that I've learned to
protect Ynyself by hurting
other people first. B\ut
you wouldn't let me do it.
I drew a circle to shut you
out but you drew a bigger
circle that took me. in. If
this has something to do
with your Christ, then I'd
like to know more about
him.
The . courtesies were
expressed by Mrs.
Donnie MacDonald.
Grace was sung ..and a
delicious lunch served by
the committee Hazel
MacDonald, Merle Tout
and Pearl MacDonald.
Our next meeting will be
our. "Thank -Offering
and the Evening
Auxiliary will be in
charge of it. , y
