The Lucknow Sentinel, 1979-09-12, Page 46page 115—Lacknow Sentinel, Wednesday, September 12, 1979 Fall Fair coming to Ripley On Sun., Sept. 9, 1979, confirmation services were held at the Anglican Church in Kinlough. Bishop Ragg officiated with Rev. George Garratt of Lucknow assisting. Those being confirmed were - Debbie Hedley daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Hedley,; Lindell Cross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Cross, and Ronald Rock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oraen Rock of Ripley. As an additional piece of equipment at the Ripley Chopping Mill now known as the Ron Stanley Feed Supply Centre, a truck with its fuel supply tank is now stationed there. The truck is used to draw feed from Listowel. and also serves the farms in the area. Brian Moffatt of Bluevale, ,,who motors to Ripley and back home at the end of each day, reports that the Pig Tail Curler feed has really caught on with the far- mers. Andy Sande of the Teeswater • area was added to the staff a few weeks ago. Alex. Maclntosh of Lucknow, an employee of several years, comes over each afternoon and operates thegrinder making the bags of chop. It is nice to see this .increase in ac- tivity as farmers use the services supplied by Ron Stanley of Bervie who owns the Ripley Chopping Mill. Lucknow had a nice day for their fall fair last Saturday. Many people from the 1 Ripley. and Huron township area attended. In fact from early noon hour till five o'clock the village streets were bare only about six . cars were parked upstreet. Murray Gaunt, M.P.P.: of Wingham, member for Huron -Bruce in .Toronto, was the Mater of Ceremonies and Jim Reed of Toronto,co-host of the C.T.V. W-5 News Show, opened the fair. Mrs. Frances (Mon- tgomery) Reed, his mother, resides at Huronvilla in Ripley. Frances grew • up in Ripley - just south of the village on thea, present Johnston MacLeod farm. Her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Montgomery. Also Jim's sister is Mrs.. Jewel (Delbert) Stanley. Mr. and Mrs., Stanley and family live in their new home at east end of Ripley on the 8th con- cession on. Queen Street. His second sister is Mrs. Eleanor Townsend, who is the Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, having won recently at Shelburne. Also cousins of Jim are Lloyd Wylds of Huronville and Warren Wylds of the 12th con- cession of Ashfield (Lochalsh area). Two men connected with the Ripley Huron of wasps or hornets making those paper ball nests above ground. And the writer is not familiar with this species. The teenage boys here have revived an old ganie. It could be called "Scuffling". Each day when the weather is nice,,,.,, they hold a session in Gore Park. The scuffling session best remembered by the writer was back in the early forties when the boys were home on their last leave before going overseas. Both were stung by savage wasps emerging from nests made in holes under the sod. The first one was Howard. Pollock, former native of the 12th. concession of Huron township in the Clark's area. Howard was stung in the legs while enjoying a game of golf about the middle of last week. Then on Thursday the keeper of the greens, ,Niels Frederiksen of Ripley who assists Jim Bell in taking care of the course and club house, suffered a painful sting on the back of his neck bringing on swelling . and headache. Next week is Fall Fair week in the Rfpley Huron Happy Hearts enjoy supper BY CHRISTENA ROBERTSON Members, and guests of Ripley Happy Heart's Club enjoyed a Pot Luck Lunch at St. Andrew's United Church on Fri., Sept. 14 at noon. Looking after the tables were Mary MacDonald, Gladys Mason, Bertha Tout, Mae Osborne and Marjorie Reid. Mrs. Francis Elliott was in charge of the program and opened by reading a poem entitled "Where does the summer go?" Marion Munn and Mrs. J.A. MacDonald sang two duets ac- companied by Mrs. Ross Martyn, Betty Janke who was introdced by Mrs. Elliott showed a filth on arthritis entitled "Pathway to Promise." Arthritis is a serious problem for many today but with continuous research there is hope of cure byy earlydiagnosis and treatment. Mrs. Janke introduced Jane Turnosky who will be succeeding her as representative in this area. She is moving out of this area. Canvassers will be. calling on you soon and ask that you give more than a thought to ar- thritis. Mrs. Elliott concluded this program with a poem "Drop a word of kind- ness." A presentation was made to Mrs. Margaret (Blue) Haycock past secretary since the founding of the Happy Heart's Club, who was recently married and moved to Mount Elgin, near Ingersoll. ` Mrs. Frank Scott acted as secretary and will carry on till December. The business meeting was chaired by Mrs. Arnold. The tran- sportation drivers are now Reg Moore,Reg Godfrey. Bert Irwin and Jim Tout: The Fall Fair committee are Mrs. Elsie Forrester and Christena Robertson. Ladies were reminded to bring a pie to the Fair booth. Senior citizens are invited to attend church service at the Anglican Church, Ripley on Sun., Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. A good sing -song led by Mrs. Florence Kirk, patrick ended the meeting. township . area - something . doing everyday. Dan A. MacDonald, president of the Ripley Agricultural Society, has called for the first work bee to be held next Monday evening at 8 p.m. at the Ripley and District Community Complex Centre. It is necessary to have a good number out to put up stands for the school exhibits, flowers, baking, needlepoint, grain, vegetables, corn and all the other indoor classes. The Ripley schools will be bringing over to, the complex their exhibits on Wednesday afternoon. These will be judged on Thursday and the teachers will arrange and put up their two displays on Thursday evening. Already secretary Don MacTavish is receiving entries outside, the snow.. fencing will go 'up en- closing the livestock. rings, and the fair grounds. In the basement of the Huron Township hall directors Cecil Sutton and Ted Rouse will appreciate help in preparing for the new poultry show.
