THE- VALUE OF STANDING CORN •We get _questions every fall about the value of standing corn for silage. -The standard answer is Vs the value.of hay or the equivalent of 6.5 bushels of grain corn per ton. An allowance for harvest- ing should be subtracted from the determined value of the crop. A 100 bushel corn crop should produce 15 tons of silage. M. R. If you have any fields that are loaded with twitch you should • consider spraying them for twitchgrass, now! There are three herbicides that can be used in the fall to control twitchgrass.' Two of these products - Cytrol and Roundup - can be used this fall and grain planted next spring. The other i Atrazine and following its use corn has to be grown. To work, both Cytrol and Roundup have to be applied to actively growing twitch - grass that has atleast 3 - 4 leaves. After application the land should not be worked for • 10 - 14 days. Both herbicides can be used until • a killing frost occurs. This past two years there have been problems control- ling twitchgrass in corn with a single application of 5 lbs. of .Atrazine. To improve.. the • control you should use a split application - 2¼ lbs. of Atra- zine this fall, followed by plowing at least 1Q - 14 days later and 2% lbs. with oil • next spring. This split appli- cation: will give excellent control but corn has to be growkin the field at least two years following treatment. No matter whatherbicide you.use, do it now and have clean fields next year. • . • • • RICK UPFOLD Crop and Soils Specialist Carhartt Cords Jackets Navy and Jeans and Pants Ilirel; JP Work Pants Outfits Shirts Smocks • Navy Green Brown * thist-.4 Lined Bell Shirts Priv-Carhartt Demin Pile Lined Vests Char -Monis Work Clothing WELCOMES yotr kVERYDAY LUCKNOW ,PHONE 128-2526 , • • Lucknow Sondes!, Wedneudaw, Septum*, 19, 1919—hg. 13 Sometimes you reap a lot more than you sow. If quackgrass is showing up in your harvest,. use Roundup® before you fall plow. You didn't plant it. But that, quackgrass.came up anyhow, choking your crop • and taking a bite out of your potential yield. • Jamming up the works at .harvest tirne. Doti't let it happen again next year. Get the jump on quackgrass, right after harvest. But not by plow- ing. Plowing just breaks up the weeds, leaving under- ground root networks ready to send up• new shoots in the ijspring. This year, before you TfaiI plow, let quackgrass regrow until most of - the weeds are at least eight inches high (the three or four leaf stage of. growth). Then, anytime • before the first Weed killing frost, apply Roundup® herbicide by Monsanto. Roundup quickly translocates • • throughout the treated weeds, • destroying them— root networks and all. Just five days after using Roundup, you can plow as usual. (Note: If you prefer to apply • Roundup in he spring, don't plow - the fields this fall). •Stop quackgrass before • it attacks next year's crop. With a pott-harvest application of Rounduri before you plow. • There's never • been a herbicide like this before. ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW THE LABEL DIRECTIONS FOR ROUNDUP.
